Best Single Player Games for PlayStation
Playstation has an iconic line of singleplayer games that everyone should try at least once, and today we're going to cover only the best.
Sony PlayStation, the leading digital publisher, isn't only known for its revolutionary consoles. They have a history of making some of the best single-player games on the gaming market, and you've surely heard of at least one of their exclusive games. Even non-exclusive games run really well on their Playstation consoles, which is exactly what makes Sony PlayStation an undeniable trademark of the gaming world.
Today's list will focus on the absolute best single-player games for PlayStation consoles, and what impact they've had on the gaming community as a whole. There are many titles that could be mentioned, but we had to pick only a few to make this list worthwhile.
Red Dead Redemption 2
Regardless of which platform you're playing on, Red Dead Redemption 2 will forever be one of the best and most visually stunning games in recent history. The first game in the series is called Red Dead Redemption, and that came out in 2010, which is why many people couldn't wait to get their hands on the second game. It was released for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set during the end of the Wild West era in 1899, and it follows a group of outlaws trying to outrun civilized society as we know it today. There are so many beautiful picturesque locations to explore in this game, and the story will leave you thinking that it couldn't have been written better. Millions of people worldwide would gladly give this game a 10/10 rating.
We can safely say that Rockstar Games delivered a brilliant game that plays well and offers immense replay value. Not many games can come close to this masterpiece.
God of War (2018)
The plot, visuals, combat system, and characters of 2018's God of War have all won numerous awards. It managed to successfully revive this series without sacrificing what made actually made it God of War. The story in particular is what many people loved about God of War. The media heralded it as the Game of the Year in 2018, with Red Dead Redemption 2 being a strong contender as well.
God of War also did exceptionally well in terms of sales, becoming the best-selling Sony PlayStation 4 game as well as the best-selling game in the series after selling over 5 million copies within a month of its release and over 19.5 million by the end of August 2021.
Great single-player games are very tough to come by, but God of War is definitely among the best, and that's a really tough image to beat nowadays. God of War 2018 is a PS4 exclusive, so you won't be able to find this gem on any other platforms.
The rise of Marvel's cinematic universe inspired other industries to follow suit. That is how and why we got a fully-fledged Spider-Man video game in 2018. It was released in September of 2018, and was made as a PS4 exclusive. Many didn't like the open-world concept and felt as if it was unoriginal. But, the story, combat, and general game mechanics all impressed players in the end.
It became one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games ever as well as one of the fastest-selling games of the year 2018. Not many saw this game's success coming, and it drew millions of people to Marvel's universe as a whole. The company that made Spider-Man (Insomniac) continued to provide support by releasing DLCs and fixing many bugs that were present.
A sequel to PlayStations Spider-Man is coming, and will most likely release in 2023. We're not sure about the exact date, but there's definitely going to be a lot of commotion when news about it drops next year. We would expect a fall or winter release next year.
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is the third installment of the famous Uncharted series of video games. It was released in 2011, and is one of the best Uncharted games in the series. Uncharted 3 came out during the golden years of the series, with Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy eventually wrapping it up as a whole.
2PlayerProductions has an informative video that explains the entire development process in detail. It's absolutely inspiring to see how their games are developed, and to which lengths Naughty Dog went to breathe life into Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. Although it was under a lot of pressure to meet the success of its predecessor (Uncharted 2), it still went on to perform quite well.
The Uncharted series has hands down the best single-player games in the action-adventure genre. Naughty Dog has stopped at nothing to build a legacy that is worth continuing, and all of their passion is translated into the games they've released. Every Uncharted game, including Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, was made like a movie.
The Last of Us
Nothing can begin to describe the impact that The Last of Us had on the gaming community. Released in 2011, The Last of Us shocked audiences with its unrivaled storytelling aspects and it got a lot of bonus points for being set in a post-apocalyptic world. Not only that, but the entire concept surrounding the game had players immediately intrigued. It would go on to become one of the best single-player games ever, competing with games like Red Dead Redemption and God of War.
The Last of Us received honors at the end of the fiscal year from many gaming journalists and game award ceremonies. It also went on to receive multiple Game of the Year awards. Lastly, it managed to sell 1.3 million copies in the first week, and 17 million by 2018. That is not including the remastered and remade versions that came later as a result of the first rendition's success.
As production on The Last of Us started, Naughty Dog was already finished with Uncharted 2, and they had to split their development teams to work on both The Last of Us and Uncharted 3. This was a big risk, but it eventually turned into an even bigger reward at the end of the day.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
CD Projekt Red is revered for making the most fleshed-out action roleplaying games out there, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was their biggest game yet. It saw us playing the character of Geralt, an enigmatic and misunderstood monster slayer. The story along with the concept had players hooked from the start, and it introduced people to the Witcher books as well.
The entire universe is based on Slavic mythology and takes inspiration from a lot of Central and Eastern European folklore. It saw colossal success after its release, and it continues to outperform many other similar games years later. The game plays flawlessly, side quests are everywhere, and the story is unlike anything we've seen in other games.
To top it all off, it also won multiple Game of the Year awards shortly after its release. It got two DLC expansions: Hearts of Stone and Blood & Wine. These expansions also saw unprecedented success, which is why a GOTY version featuring all of the expansions and downloadable content was released in 2016. Other future brands of publishers should really look into making games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, Horizon Zero Dawn pleasantly surprised PlayStation fans across the world. It was released in 2017 as a PS4 exclusive, and follows the story of a hunter trying to navigate a world that's full of huge machines out of Star Wars Jedi. It falls into the same category of games as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but some have argued that it would've been better in a more strict or semi-open world setting gameplay-wise.
An original game and concept like this were well-received, and people are still playing this years later. Although some aspects of the game did receive heavy criticism, casual fans loved it, and it went on to sell 20 million copies worldwide. It did get an expansion and a sequel, both of which were liked by the general public.
Lastly, what mainly drew people to this single-player game was the stunning geography and visuals. Many communities were exclusively built around the visuals, and the sequel followed up on even better visuals. It did eventually get released for PC, broadening its already large player base.
That's all for our list of the best single-player games for PlayStation. Other great games like the Final Fantasy VII remake should've also made it on the list, but we could only handpick a few of the best games out there.
