Best Server in Genshin Impact For A Better Game Experience

From latency issues to co-op incompatibility dictating who you can play with, the importance of playing on the best server should not be underestimated.
Best Server in Genshin Impact For A Better Game Experience

Genshin Impact is one of the most played games in the world, estimated to have more than 60+ million monthly active players.

That said, the game has to accommodate players from across the world by dividing itself based on different server regions.

Different Servers in Genshin Impact

Currently, the game servers are divided into four main regions, with some countries being defaulted into them for the best connection. The regions and their respective countries are as follows.

European Server

Aside from European countries, this region is also recommended for players from:

  • Bahrain

  • Cyprus

  • Israel

  • Kuwait

  • Lebanon

  • Malta

  • Qatar

  • Russia

  • Saudi Arabia

  • South Africa

  • Turkey

  • The United Arab Emirates.

American Server

This region is for players from:

  • Argentina

  • Bolivia

  • Brazil

  • Canada

  • Chile

  • Colombia

  • Costa Rica

  • Ecuador

  • El Salvador

  • Guatemala

  • Honduras

  • Mexico

  • Nicaragua

  • Panama

  • Paraguay

  • Peru

  • The United States

  • Uruguay.

Asian Server

This region is for players from:

  • Australia

  • India

  • Indonesia

  • Japan

  • Korea

  • Malaysia

  • New Zealand

  • Oman

  • Singapore

  • Philippines

  • Vietnam.

SAR

This region is for players from:

  • Taiwan

  • Hong Kong

  • Macao

Differences Between Servers

Functionally speaking, there is no real difference between the servers in terms of the content available. In other words, they all share the same story, character, weapons, and artifact sets. So, picking one server over another is no real competitive advantage. Competition aside, there are some minor differences between servers:

Censorship

The only content-wise difference between the servers is the bit of censorship applied to the Chinese servers only starting from patch 2.4, in which characters such as Jean, Amber, Rosaria, and Mona had some slight alternations made to their outfits due to their revealing nature. The other servers received these as free costumes. A few minor points to note aside from this are:

Co-op Limitation

For players not concerned with ping or co-op, the only real difference is the type of multiplayer partners they will be matched up with. For instance, playing in the Europe servers makes it more likely for you to run into people on the same server.

Community

Some players like to claim that some player bases in different servers are a bit more toxic than others, but there is no real reasoning or evidence to back these claims up.

Update Times

Since servers in the East are ahead in global time, they usually get the events and updates a couple of hours earlier than the western regions.

Importance of Playing on the Optimal Server

Regardless of whether you're playing on mobile, PC or console, the importance of playing on the server closest to you should not be underestimated. First of all, your server determines the country you will be communicating with for data transfer. This means the ping you get is entirely dependent on the server.

Secondly, your co-op experience is also greatly dictated by what region you play in for various reasons that will be discussed later.

Server Effects on Game Ping

While initially doesn’t seem like an important factor in a game primarily focused on single player, Ping plays quite an important role in many places.

Similar to other online games, your game ping denotes the data transfer latency. This means the higher your ping, the longer the game will take to respond to your inputs and behave accordingly.

If your ping is too high, you will end up messing up dodge timings in combat and missing out on your burst windows. This can greatly reduce rotation efficiency as many of the best compositions require tight rotation management. As such, your connection stability directly affects your efficiency in combat.

Even in the overworld, ping can be frustrating sometimes when tackling things such as slime or balloon puzzles. You can aim at them with your bows and feel confident in your shot, but it can still fail to register and miss simply due to lag caused by high ping. This can build a fair amount of annoyance with the game when it is your server connection’s fault.

Server Effects on Co-op

Similar to the issue with the balloon puzzles above, when playing co-op with friends and trying to coordinate attacks and rotations, latency can often serve as a significant hurdle in achieving optimal results.

You lose out on precious element burst time, and sometimes you and your friend will simply see each other teleporting all over the place, resulting in breaking immersion.

Moreover, your choice of server also limits who you can play with because of the lack of data transfer that we will be talking about in this guide shortly.

Let’s not forget that the worst-case scenario is that you and your friend on different devices decide to grind until you both unlock co-op mode but cannot because you didn’t check the server selection beforehand.

So ideally, you should try to pick the server that all your friends and the people you want to play with are on if you are someone who values co-op experiences.

Changing Servers

If you’re looking to change server, you will see the title screen with the “Start Game” option and your default server underneath when you load into the game.

Click on the region allocated to you, and you will load up the available list of servers.

Note: For PS4 users, the region of your PSN account results in the automatic selection of your server by the game. On the other hand, PC and mobile devices do not have this issue.

Data Integrity When Changing Servers

It’s important to remember that you do not lose your data when you choose to play the game on a different server region from the same account.

However, if you swap to a different game server, your data will not be transferred over. While you can play the game cross-platform, the same cannot be said for cross-server gameplay.

Once you create an account on a server, your UID is bound to that server with that data.

If you choose to play on a different server to co-op with your friends or for whatever reason, you will have either start all over again or purchase an account, in which case, you should browse websites for account purchasing.

In conclusion, if you wish for a convenient optimal experience, you should pick the server closest to your location. However, if you wish to play with your friends, you will all have to agree on a server to grind accounts on mutually.

Make sure to consider both these factors before finalizing your decision to pick the best particular server region for yourself because that decision is permanent and cannot be changed.

Best Server in Genshin Impact

All in all, while it’s most ideal for you to play on the server most closest to you geographically, I personally prefer the American server. Even though, judging by where I live, I should technically be logging onto Asian servers, I find the difference to be hardly significant. This is perhaps due to the better cellular infrastructure over there, which is also why Genshin Impact itself recommended the American server to me!

We hope this guide gave you a helpful overview of what to consider before picking a server for playing on in Genshin Impact.
