Pet cats can do “bunny hopping” where they grab something such as a toy or your arm with their front legs then kick and claw it with their back legs. It’s not like that in gaming.
What is Bunny Hopping?
In video game terms, Bunny Hopping is running while jumping regularly. There are different reasons why players would do this and it usually depends on what the game allows. Not all games allow for Bunny Hopping and it’s not always a good thing to do. In the games where Bunny Hopping is common, there is a benefit to doing this.
A BHOP is something that the Source Engine allows players to do which means players can move faster for a limited time.
Being able to move faster in CSGO is a game-changer, it lets you and your team reach areas much quicker than normal which is perfect for setting up an ambush or surprising an enemy when they try to move around the map. It’s especially beneficial for the Terrorist team on certain maps when rushing towards the Bombsites or objectives. The only downside is that they might do the same thing back to you or when wrongly executed it can slow your velocity down.
How to Bunny Hop in CS:GO
To B-Hop in CSGO, the player needs to set their jump to an easy-to-press button. There are different potential buttons for this outside of the Space key. It’s also possible to bind the jump movement to the mouse wheel up or down. This is all part of setting up the key bindings to whatever you want so you have better overall game experience.
BHop Commands for you to copy+paste
Binding jump yo the mouse wheel scroll is quite common and if you have the Console Commands already activated then you can do it through there. Just type or copy and paste one of these commands:bind mwheelup +jump bind mwheeldown +jump
If you don’t have the Command Console unlocked already, then click this link to get full instructions on how to unlock it and why you should do this.
For the basic movement itself, you cannot Bunny Hop forwards or backwards. It only works when done side to side as a strafing movement. To perform the movement there are different potential combinations to move left or right quickly.
If you’ve never done a Bunny Hop before then you’ll want to start with just one. Here is how to bhop in csgo:
- Press forwards
- Press D
- Move the mouse to the right
- Jump just before you land
- Press A
- Move your mouse to the left.
It’s a good idea to practice this movement until you become more comfortable with doing this. It doesn’t matter which direction you start to move in with this so just do whatever feels natural to you.
The best place to practice this is on a private server. Do keep in mind however that those local servers have no latency which means you get very good at doing this on a local server but as soon you get into a game… it doesn’t go very well. In a regular game, there will be latency and unless you learn to compensate with this from the start, you will have a more difficult time.
The latency in games is obvious via the Ping so it’s best to learn how to BHop on another server. Some people have servers exclusively for this and if you join a clan you might find they also have one set-up for people to use as testing things in the game. Or you could just practise while you’re playing full matches. Both methods work!
One thing to remember with Bunny Hopping is that the mouse movement speed needs to be smooth and consistent. Too fast, slow or jerky will cause you to lose speed instead of gaining it. So it gives you the opposite result and instead of reaching areas first to grab a quick kill, you just slow hop into a room and get immediately fragged yourself.
Why you should train your Bunnyhop skills
A big benefit for Bunny Hopping is that it makes you harder to hit. And if you’re harder to hit then you’re harder to kill! The fast and sudden movements also mean that other players will have a harder time lining up shots on the person that’s using the BHop movement during fights. It’s common for people to use this manoeuvre during confrontations or engagements as well in open areas with little cover. Using Bunny Hopping doesn’t work behind cover but for open areas it’s perfect.
Bunny Hopping is a common gameplay aspect in CSGO and many other games as well. For CSGO however, moving like this gives you a very advantageous speed boost. While it might sound a little complex if you’ve never seen a video of someone doing this movement, Bunny Hopping is very simple. Anyone can learn how to do this easy movement and most players already use this in games. If you’ve seen people reach areas further away from their spawn quickly, this is how they’re doing it.
The faster movement is the biggest benefit for Bunny Hopping which gives benefits in combat as well. It allows players to strafe much faster than normal so they’re harder to hit and kill making them more likely to survive the fight. Bunny Hopping can also be crucial during fights in open areas and means players can quickly escape the area or gives them a greater chance of survival during the fight.
Remember to change your jump keybindings to one that’s more comfortable to press regularly. This is binding is personal to you so make sure it is comfortable. However, a common keybinding for jump is the mousewheel scroll though you can also keep it bound to space if you prefer.
