Perfect timings and exploiting advantages are what you need to do to outpace your opponents. Reaching the Feudal Age isn’t so difficult, you just need to gather the initial 400 Food & 200 Gold, which will later enable you to build your civilization's landmark. If you’re struggling to secure that gold medal in Art of War or your friends just keep getting it before you, these should be your first moves:

1. Shift-Click on the Villager production in your Town Center (This will queue up 4 Villagers to be produced)

2. Send all of your available villagers to gather food from the starting Sheep next to your Town Center

3. Send your scout to collect two additional Sheep that you will farm later on

4. Once found, herd the sheep close to your Town Center

The faster you execute the moves above, the better. The most common mistake people make is to send villagers to chop up some wood, but as we want to get Feudal Age as soon as possible, the initial 150 wood will do the trick. Your next step would be to set up a Rally Point near the gold mine from your Town Center. The next villager produced should be assigned to build a Mining Camp near it, and slowly prepare and secure the 200 gold.

After he’s done herding some sheep, send the scout around the map to potentially find any of your opposing players. The next villager produced should be the one constructing a House. You can start practicing your micro-management skills by shift queueing him to first build a house, and join the other villager in the gold mine. To do that, hold Shift and give the order to build a house, and then work on the mine.

Reaching Feudal Age Fastest: Post 2:30 Minute Mark Commands

Having just 2 workers in the gold mine will be just fine, and if you did all of the above in time you should have the 200 gold just before the timer hits 2:30. If that is the case, reassign the 2 workers from your mine and send them to construct the landmark of your choice as soon as you hit 400 Food as well. In the meantime make sure to not forget to constantly produce villagers, and keep a close look at your population limit.

While the landmark is under construction, you should ideally build another house if you've been consistently producing villagers as instructed. If you've executed everything on time, you will reach the Feudal Age around or before the 5-minute mark. Having a comfortable view and everything in sight is key when playing Age of Empires, and to do that you will have to know how to rotate buildings and the camera view.

These are the most basic build orders that work for almost any civilization. However, there are of course exceptions when playing some civilizations, and the build orders might vary or be just slightly different. For example, with Rus, you won’t need an early Mining Camp as you can get the 200 Gold through their Bounty Mechanic.

After you’ve successfully reached the Feudal Age around the 5-minute mark for the first time, you can start using your imagination and trying things out. This is unique to this civ and is one of the reasons why Rus can actually start aging up starting from minute 1:50 even if your opener is done correctly. Another notable mention is the Chinese civilization since they construct buildings faster than the other civilizations. This is obviously because of the unique perk that allows them to construct non-defensive buildings 100% faster.
