Everything you need to know about Axolotl

A Minecraft Axolotl is one of the newer additions to the game's growing list of animals. Axolotls are an aquatic mob known for being both cute and dangerous.

One of the most interesting points about axolotls in Minecraft is the reason behind their addition to the game in the first place: they are a critically endangered species.

There are a bunch of other reasons you might want to go looking for this passive aquatic mob in game too, we’ve got them here for you to check.

Where can you find an Axolotl?

Axolotls in Minecraft are mobs that are endemic to lush caves, specifically the aquifers in them as axolotls spawn underwater. And a lush cave can be tricky to find if you don’t know what to look for.

1

If you are in creative mode, you can use a command to ask the game to find the cave for you. The command is : /locate biome Minecraft:lush_cave. With the coordinates that appear, click on them to teleport yourself over.

2

If you want to do things the old fashioned way, you can explore until you find some Azalea bushes or trees. Their roots extend deep underground and into lush caves that might be home to some axolotls for you!

The 5 Axolotl colours

You might be surprised to find out there are variations in axolotl colour. There are five to be specific that you may come across. And we know you might want to catch them all.

  • Pink
  • Brown
  • Gold
  • Cyan
  • Blue

The significance of the Blue Axolotl

The rare blue axolotls in Minecraft have a probability of spawning 1 in 1200 times. Why is this? Well it's because that is the approximate number of axolotls in the wild in real life, another nod towards its endangered species status.

4

When it comes to the rare blue axolotl, Minecraft uses it as a reference to a Mudkip from Pokemon. They are also just as cute. Finding blue axolotls is an achievement that a player should definitely be proud of.

Taming an Axolotl

When it comes to taming an axolotl, you are in a unique situation. This is due to the fact that Axolotls are the only Minecraft mob that needs to be fed a live mob to be tamed. The mob in question is tropical fish.

5

Tropical fish can be found in any biome that has tropical water, such as in coral reefs or in mangroves. And to get a live tropical fish for your axolotl, you need to have a bucket of water.

6

Simply right click on the tropical fish with the bucket and you will obtain a bucket of tropical fish.

To tame an axolotl, this is what you do:

  1. Equip the bucket of tropical fish in your hand
  2. Right click on the axolotl with the bucket of fish
  3. Hearts should appear indicating the axolotl is now tamed

7

The more buckets of tropical fish you have, the better. You are going to need them soon! In the wild axolotls will consume any type of fish and even glow squids.

Catching an axolotl in a water bucket

Now that you’ve found and befriended your axolotl, it is time for you to catch it. Is this reminding you of another game where you have to capture cute mobs by any chance?

8

With catching an axolotl, you are going to need to have a water bucket and follow these easy steps:

  1. Stand near the axolotl
  2. With the water bucket in hand, right click on the axolotl
  3. Congratulations, you have now obtained an axolotl in a bucket

9

With an axolotl in a bucket in your inventory, you are free to explore without the worry of your little friend getting lost or killed.

Looking after your Minecraft Axolotl

Axolotls require a bit of extra care if you are planning on befriending one. Always make sure that you can see your axolotl and that it has access to water.

10

If your axolotl spends too much time out of water it will start to take damage and eventually die, so leave them somewhere that is at least 2 blocks deep with water. Unlike dolphins, fish and squid, they will be fine if on land and it is raining or if there is a thunderstorm.

Axolotls are also more vulnerable to extra damage from items with the Impaling enchantment, a trait common to aquatic mobs

How to breed Axolotls

Adult axolotls are cute, but a baby axolotl is a lot cuter. Once you’re ready to experience the joy of seeing baby axolotls, it's time to breed axolotls.

11

To breed adult axolotls, make sure you have some tropical fish in buckets and any two axolotls. Here’s what you do next:

  1. Equip the bucket in your hand
  2. Right click on one Axolotl and then the next
  3. Hearts will appear indicating the tame axolotls are now in love mode
  4. A baby axolotl spawns

When breeding axolotls successfully, the baby axolotl will also give you between 1 to 7 experience orbs.

12

There is also a chance that the baby will be a rare blue axolotl. But as the odds are so low for it to be a blue axolotl, it will likely inherit one of the parents’ colours at random.

Are Axolotls friendly or are they the cutest predator?

An Axolotl is a passive mob when it comes to interacting with a player and you can even take them for a walk when on a lead.

13

However, they are not called the cutest predator for nothing. Axolotls attack all aquatic mobs except for turtles, dolphins and other axolotls. They will attack Drowned and each attack does 2 points of damage.

An axolotl will also prioritize killing hostile mobs over a non-hostile mob. Also after killing a non-hostile mob, you will have to wait for 2 minutes before recommencing the hunt.

The healing power of friendship, aquatic combat and your Axolotl

Axolotls also come with some interesting effect boosts that they can give players and they have a few tricks up their sleeve as well.

14

Effects from an Axolotl

An axolotl gives a player Regeneration I every 5 seconds for up to 2 minutes. Regeneration is a status effect that restores a player or mobs health over time.

Axolotls will also remove mining fatigue if you kill a mob that is in combat with said axolotl. It’s also something useful when fighting elder guardians at a sea temple.

Playing Dead

Minecraft axolotls know how to play dead. They play dead if they take damage underwater, letting themselves drop to the ground for about 10 seconds while gaining Regeneration I.

While using regeneration, mobs will ignore the healing axolotls. And the fact that axolotls know how to play dead is a feature common to axolotls in real life too.
