Default Layout
The Default layout is the bog standard layout that you start the game with. As far as controller settings are concerned, they're not the best controller settings in Apex, but they're not the worst either. If it's good for ImperialHal, then it's good for the rest of us. Let's take a look at what they are.
The Default Layout is as follows:
Action | Button |
---|---|
Jump | A |
Crouch [Hold] | B |
Interact/Pickup/Reload | X |
Cycle Weapon/Holster [Hold] | Y |
Aim Down Sight [Hold] | LT |
Attack | RT |
Tactical Ability | LB |
Ping/Ping Wheel [Hold] | RB |
Sprint | L |
Melee | R |
Use Health/Shield Kit | Up |
Extra Character Action | Down |
Toggle Fire Mode | Left |
Equip Grenade | Right |
Map [Toggle] | View |
Ultimate Ability | LB + RB |
The pros of this layout is the fact that it's considered "the" Apex Legends controller settings. I.e. the devs have tried to optimize them to be as close to the ideal settings for playing Apex as possible. Lots of the best Apex controller players disagree, but hey, to each his own. They're not bad, it's just that they give you no advantage. And they may feel weird for some players who play claw.
Evolved Layout
The Evolved layout is probably one of the best layouts in Apex Legends and my personal favorite. It only slightly alters the Default layout, but it does so just enough to make it feel much better. Scrappy, a famous Apex content creator, also uses this layout. He's one of the top 5 Loba players in the world, which is no small feat by any means.
Here's the Evolved Layout:
Action | Button |
---|---|
Jump | LB |
Crouch [Hold] | R |
Interact/ Pickup/ Reload | X |
Cycle Weapon / Holster [Hold] | Y |
Am Down Sight [Hold] | LT |
Attack | RT |
Tactical Ability | A |
Ping/ Ping Wheel [Hold] | RB |
Sprint | L |
Melee | B |
Use Health/ Shield Kit | Up |
Extra Character Action | Down |
Toggle Fire Mode | Left |
Equip Grenade | Right |
Map [Toggle] | View |
Ultimate Ability | A + RB |
The advantage of the Evolved layout is that you have much more freedom of movement as well as much better view control over the Default layout. Plus, if you have the right Apex aim assist settings, you'll find that it's much easier to make those quick match-deciding snapshots.
The Best Layout for Non-Claw Players
If you've been following Apex Legends streamers, then you've probably heard of Verhulst. He's one of the best Apex streamers currently. He's also notorious for playing on a controller. But unlike many of his colleagues, he doesn't play claw. Here's how he sets his layout up.
Action | Button |
---|---|
Jump | R |
Crouch [Hold] | LT |
Interact/ Pickup/ Reload | X |
Cycle Weapon / Holster [Hold] | L |
Aim Down Sight [Hold] | LB |
Attack | RB |
Tactical Ability | RT |
Ping/ Ping Wheel [Hold] | A |
Sprint | Y |
Melee | B |
Use Health/ Shield Kit | Up |
Extra Character Action | Down |
Toggle Fire Mode | Left |
Equip Grenade | Right |
Map [Toggle] | |
Ultimate Ability | RT + A |
These are the optimal controller settings for non-claw players. Probably even the best controller settings. it may take you some time to get used to them (it sure took me), but after a while, you'll really start to feel the benefits. It almost completely negates the "finger advantage" claw players have over non-claw players, hence why they're the best controller settings for non-claw players. Plus, it eliminates the need for pedals, which is another plus.
