Best Apple Bandai Pippin Games Ranked [Top 10 Classics]

1 /10

Mobile Suit Gundam: White Base - The 13th Independence Forces

I'm a stinker for anything Gundam related. So when I first learned that they made a game after the Trojan Horse, I absolutely had to try it.

Mobile Suit Gundam: White Base

Now, after having tried it, I'm happy to report that it's one of the best Apple Bandai Pippin games I've ever played. The Pippin platform was notorious for being saturated with rail-shooters, with only a few exceptions here and there. This is one of those expectations. It's a strategy game with surprisingly good visuals, some of the best video game music I've ever heard, and engaging gameplay. What's not to love?

Super Marathon

Not many people know this, but this game was Bungie's first foray into shooters. Super Marathon walked so that Halo could run.

Super Marathon

Honestly, It's kind of sad how little recognition this game got. It was initially released for the Pippin @World console, and there was also a licensed version for the Mac OS if you had an Apple Computer. Still, that was not enough, as the game simply did not get the recognition it deserved. For me, it's one of the best 90s games, and it's definitely one of the best Pippin titles, that's for sure. But alas.

Myst

It's always the unsung heroes that change history the most. One of those unsung heroes is Myst.

Myst

Myst is a graphic adventure game made for the Apple Pippin console way back in 1993. This game paved the way for some of the best adventure games later on. The gameplay was really simple, yet exceedingly charming. What's more, because the game was non-linear; every playthrough was distinct. Sadly, the game was plagued by hardware limitations at the time. Thankfully, you can still get it off Steam.

The Journeyman Project: Pegasus Prime

When this game came out in 1997, it was one of the best futuristic games that people had ever seen at the time. Looking back at it, however, it definitely had its silly moments at times.

The Journeyman Project: Pegasus Prime

Don't get me wrong. I still think that this game is one of the best Apple Bandai Pippin games of all time. It's just that I can't take the live-action cutscenes seriously. It's something that 90s games were crazy about (that I'm glad ended with Red Alert 3). Other than the dreadful cutscenes, the game actually had a pretty good story, and some crazy good guitar riffs to boot. Worth a revisit if you own a copy already.

5 /10

Shock Wave Assault

I have no idea why the developers had the urge to split the word Shockwave into two, but it doesn't matter. Shock Wave Assault is a banger of a game even after 30 years.

Shock Wave Assault

Shock Wave Assault was released for the Apple Bandai Pippin Atmark game console back in 1996. The game was a CD ROM based combat flight shooter that offered you a surprising amount of freedom for a 90s game. The thing I like about Shock Wave Assault is that it pioneered the way for subsequent arcade flight games. My beloved Ace Combat series would not have existed if this game hadn't come before it.

Gadget - Invention, Travel, & Adventure

Gadget is more of an interactive movie than it is a game, however, it's definitely worthy of a mention just for how revolutionary it was at the time.

Gadget - Invention, Travel, & Adventure

The game was released to the Apple Bandai Pippin gaming console in 1993 and pushed the Pippin Technology to its virtual limits. The thing that set Gatget apart from other games is that it heavily relied on computer-generated imagery to set its scenes. Seeing how bad 90s CGI was, this looks extremely uncanny nowadays. But back then, it was the coolest thing kids had ever seen. Honestly, this game belongs in a museum.

Arcade Classics

You can never go wrong with the Arcade Classics, now, can you?

Arcade Classics

Arcade Classics isn't as much of a game as it's a compilation of arcade games that came before. Specifically, Galaga, Galaxian & Ms. Pac-Man. The funny thing is that these games are noticeably different from their counterparts. Galaxian seems to be an NES port, and Ms.Pac-Man is most likely an SNES port. Why they did it like this I have no idea. But hey, at least the games are fun.

8 /10

Crime Patrol

Looking back at it, this is one of the funniest games of all time. It took everything about the live-action crazy of the 90s and turned it up to 11.

Crime Patrol

Crime Patrol was released for the Pippin platform in 1993. In essence, it was a "gun game," as they used to be called back then. Your character would move through the scenes and you had to shoot the random baddies that popped up. A Sega Saturn port was planned for the game, but it got canceled soon after the game's release. Who could have guessed that releasing silly games about serious topics could hurt sales?

9 /10

L-Zone

L-Zone was actually made by the same developers as Gadget. It too strived to push the technological boundaries of its time, which it did. Sadly, the technology of 1992 could not match the developer's ambition.

L-Zone

At the time, L-Zone was quite well received. It merged art and video games into one, which was an amicable endeavor. As a game, there really isn't much to talk about. As an experience, it's something else, even now after 30 years. I'd urge everyone to go back and experience it at least once, just to get an appreciation of how far computer graphics have come in the last 30 years.

10 /10

Escape From Cyber City

It's such a shame that this game never caught on. In my honest opinion, it's one of the best anime games. At least for the Apple Pippin platform.

Escape From Cyber City

Here's a fun fact. This game is the first game to utilize full-cell animation. This made the animations look seamless, which was a massive improvement over the other games on the gaming market at the time. Just from an aesthetic point, this game is an absolute beauty to look at. Paired with a good story and fun gameplay, and you have a certified classic.
