Fishing is one of the many unlocks in the game that has prerequisite quests. For this particular unlock you will need to have the Serenitea Pot already unlocked, which can be done through Madame Ping’s world quest in Liyue Harbor.
Once you have the Teapot you can accept a world quest (which you can also quit) from Katheryne which basically takes you through the whole fishing minigame, how and where to do it, what the intricacies of the minigame are, and how you can catch different fish based on what time it is.
Fishing Preparations
Just like setting off on any adventure, it pays off to be well equipped before going on a fishing spree. The first thing that you are going to need is bait, and a lot of it. There are a few achievements tied to fishing as well as a weapon, refinement materials for said weapon, unique fishing rods, and a few blueprints so you are going to go through a lot of bait.
There are 5 types of bait in the game currently which take the form of:
- Fruit Paste Bait
- Redrot Bait
- False Worm Bait
- Fake Fly Bait
The first recipe you get through the course of the initial fishing quest but the rest need to be bought at the Mondstadt Fishing Association which can be found near the Mondstadt docks. The Mondstadt Association also sells a rod unique to the region which makes catching fish in Mondstadt easier. The recipes are mostly easy to create, requiring only common crafting materials but you will need materials from Inazuma to make half the baits. There is only one bait so far that cannot be bought in Mondstadt. Sugardew Bait can be exclusively bought from the fishing association in Sumeru and is pretty easy to make.
Fishing Line Stabilizer:
It would also be prudent if you bring along the fishing line stabilizer that was introduced in version 3.0. It makes fishing a lot easier as it provides buff the more fish you catch with it on. It tracks every fish species separately so you’ll want this gadget as soon as possible. It can be bought at any fishing association for just 3 Medaka.
Fishing Locations
Fishing locations are not marked on the map but instead have to be marked manually. They are easy to spot however, as they make a circular ripple in the water and can often be spotted from afar. If you are a completionist and want to get all that there is to get in the game then you will have to have fishing spots marked as that will help a lot in deciding the best farming route as fishing spots dry out very quickly.
Most of the locations are pretty logical and you will come across them just through exploration and quests but they can also be found in the strangest places such as in Enkanomiya, the Chasm and even Dragonspine.
Fishing Association Rewards
Each main area, namely Mondstadt, Liyue, Inazuma, and Sumeru contain special fishing rewards found only through those vendors.
Monstadt Rewards
The Mondstadt Fishing Association rewards are the ones that you will want as soon as possible. As previously mentioned, all the bait recipes are found at the vendor located just out the nort-eastern gate, near the docks.
The Mondstadt rewards include:
Item Type | Reward | Required Item(s) |
Blueprint | Formula: Redrot Bait | 3 Medaka |
Blueprint | Formula: False Worm Bait | 3 Medaka |
Blueprint | Formula: Fake Fly Bait | 3 Medaka |
Fishing Rod | Windtangler | 20 Medaka 20 Aizen Medaka 20 Venomspine Fish 20 Tea-Colored Shirakodai |
Liyue Rewards
The Liyue rewards are much fewer than any other region, having only 2 rewards but one of the rewards is a blueprint that looks great in any Serenitea Pot and gives you a chance to show off some of the best fish you’ve caught. The Liyue Fishing Association can be found at the docks in Liyue Harbor.
Item Type | Reward | Required Item(s) |
Blueprint | Pool of Sapphire Grace | 10 Medaka |
Fishing Rod | Wishmaker | 20 Medaka 20 Sweet-Flower Medaka 20 Betta 20 Brown Shirakodai |
The Pool of Sapphire Grace is a particularly important blueprint for fishing enthusiasts but we’ll get to that after all the rewards have been listed.
Inazuma Rewards
The Inazuman Fishing Association, situated just outside of the capital, houses some of the best fishing rewards found in the game.
It contains a 4-star weapon that is amazing with any polearm users that rely on Energy Recharge and with enough fishing you can get it to max refinement rank in no time. The weapon, aptly named The Catch, is especially good with both Raiden and Shenhe, allowing you to essentially spam their Elemental Burst. All of the rewards include:
Item Type | Reward | Required Item(s) |
Fishing Rod | Narukawa Ukai | 20 Medaka 20 Glaze Medaka 20 Lunged Stickleback 20 Purple Shirakodai |
Weapon | The Catch | 6 Raimei Angelfish 20 Golden Koi 20 Rusty Koi |
Weapon Refinement Material | Ako’s Sake Vessel (4) | 3 Raimei Angelfish 10 Pufferfish 10 Bitter Pufferfish |
The Narukawa Ukai is just like any other area-specific fishing rods in that it allows you to catch fish in that area faster and more easily. The weapon is one of the best 4-star weapons in the game and the fact that you can get it to max rank without spending even a single Primogem sets it apart from most 4-stars (speaking of Primogems, here are the best ways to use them). Keep in mind though that taking The Catch to max refinement rank will see you purchasing Ako’s Sake Vessel a total of four times which means that you will need 12 Raimei Angelfish, 40 Pufferfish, and 40 Bitter Pufferfish all together.
Sumeru Rewards:
Sumeru’s Fishing Association can be found right outside of Port Ormos, and has the highest number of rewards to claim.
Item Type | Reward | Required Item(s) |
Fishing Rod | Serendipity | 20 Medaka 20 Tree Fruit Angler 20 Sunset Angler 20 Sandstorm Angler |
Weapon | End of the Line | 4 Peach of the Deep Waves 16 Lazurite Axe Marlin 16 Halcyon Jade Axe Marlin |
Weapon Refinement Material | Original Fish Ointment | 2 Peach of the Deep Waves 8 Lazurite Axe Marlin 8 Halcyon Jade Axe Marlin |
Blueprint | Sugardew Bait | 3 Medaka |
Blueprint | Shaded Clarity | 10 Medaka |
The fishing rod in Sumeru is one of the most beautiful ones to date and it is helpful for catching Sumerun species. The Sumeru Fishing Association also has a great bow that you can redeem for fish, which essentially means a free 4-star weapon that you can get to max refinement rank with just a little bit of fishing. The fishing bait is essential for catching fish in Sumeru and the other blueprint is a pretty cool aquarium which can house three ornamental fish at a time.
Ornamental Fish
Sometimes when you notice a fishing spot you’ll see a pillar of blue light emanating from the middle. Do not be alarmed, instead rejoice for you have come across a fishing spot that contains an ornamental fish. Ornamental fish are variants of normal fish that can be caught and displayed in a Pool of Sapphire Grace.
Ornamental versions exist for every type of fish in the game so catching all of them to display in your Serenitea Pot is a very real possibility. Keep in mind though that they are harder to catch than normal fish and will put up more of a fight. It is best to keep in mind that area-specific fishing rods can give you an edge here and makes catching these fish much easier.
Fishing Secrets
There is a lot more to fishing than just what meets the eye so make sure to fish in every spot you find, you’ll never know what you might come across…
