DPS Means Damage Per Second
The term DPS, the abbreviated version of Damage Per Second, has two meanings:
- The amount of damage dealt within a second.
- A class or character that is capable of dealing huge amounts of damage.
With that said, the second definition of DPS as mentioned above is what the Genshin Impact community usually uses. The community, and I myself, would naturally refer to a powerful character capable of killing enemies fast as a DPS character.
If you've ever wondered how to see your highest damage dealt in Genshin Impact, it's almost guaranteed it will come from your DPS characters.
Types of DPS Characters in Genshin Impact
If you are part of a Genshin Impact online community such as one on Reddit or Discord, then I am sure you might have heard other interesting terms. Here are a few that I myself have seen, and wondered for quite a while before truly understanding them.
- On-field DPS - A character that needs more active time (the controlled character) to deal damage. Usually the main character in the most popular Genshin Impact YouTubers and streamers' highest damage showcase videos. Some of them include best Cryo characters, like Ganyu.
- Off-field DPS - A character that can still deal damage without having to be the controlled character.
- Sub-DPS - A character that does reasonable amounts of damage, but normally not as high as an On-field DPS. Think of Sub-DPS characters as the backup damage dealer. Some of these characters are one of the best Anemo characters, like Venti or Kazuha.
