Worst Teams to Run in Genshin Impact (Don’t Use Them If You Want to Progress)

Genshin Impact offers a wide variety of paid and free characters to mix and match to make your teams. Some people prefer simply putting all their favorite characters in one team regardless of synergy; others like to team-build for the most damage.

Regardless of which category you fall into, we've prepared a short list of the types of teams you should avoid creating if you want your combat experiences to go smoothly.

Since there are so many different team compositions, we will focus more on the general Don'ts of team composition based on character roles rather than any specific singular characters (with one exception).

The four primary roles are DPS, Enabler/Sub-DPS, Support, and Healer

So without further delay, let's get started.

Mono Element (Except Geo)

1

Elemental Skills and Elemental Bursts are compelling tools and create the core of Genshin Impact's current combat meta. These include many powerful reactions such as melt, vaporize, freeze, superconduct, aggravate, etc. These reactions allow you to make the best use of your team rotations to gain stacking buffs for your team and apply debuffs to your enemies.

However, you need a team focused on applying a particular type of reaction to benefit from these reactions the most. This is one of the reasons for the most robust comps being the strongest. It is due to their abilities to consistently take advantage of these reactions in the best possible way.

Lack Of Combination

On the other hand, when you run a mono element comp, you miss out on all these reactions and buff effects (unless you’re running against Geo in Genshin). This means you will be relying purely on your base normal attack and elemental damage to deal with enemies.

2

Not only that, but you would be hard-pressed to deal with any enemy with an elemental shield that corresponds to your element of choice (Looking at you, Abyss Mages and Elemental Constructs). It's not like the elemental resonance buff stacks, so there's honestly no reason to opt for such comps.

Selfish DPS-Only Teams

3

A selfish DPS refers to a DPS character who likes to demand field time for themselves rather than swapping to other characters and rotating regularly.

These can be some of the best Genshin Impact characters and generally provide some of the largest numbers for great damage.

Mismanaged Field Time

This, however, can become an issue when you go overboard and build your entire team comp around these characters. Field time in combat should also be viewed as a limited resource. Comps like these have more than two of your characters competing with the others to monopolize as much field time as possible.

The result is a mishmash where maybe you do get some bits of damage off here and there, but none of the characters are able to play to their strengths. Your damage output suffers a lot as you struggle to keep each character on the field to deal damage as their kits intend.

Zero Support

Not only this, teams like these tend to lack any valuable support such as consistent elemental application, shielding, damage buffs, or even healing. This makes them much more prone to dying as even the highest tier characters cannot carry you on their own without the necessary support.

Teams Without a Main DPS

4

On the other hand, we have the types of teams made up only of non-DPS units. Support and Enabler/Sub-DPS characters come in wide varieties. They can range from your generic healers or shielders to Anemo characters who provide valuable crowd control or elemental damage application off-field to the entire team.

These characters are generally considered some of the best for the top-tier team compositions in Genshin Impact. However, they are a shield without a sword, similar to how pure DPS is a sword with no shield.

Not Competitive Enough

They have decent damage, and the correct setups can give you some surprisingly powerful reactions from abilities such as their elemental burst damage. Unfortunately, this isn't enough to keep these comps competitive or on par with what a good comp would be. Most of your damage comes from regular and charged attacks that support characters that lack quite a bit.

You could forcefully try to build one or two of them as main DPS characters but understand that this is not the role they are made for. In other words, you lose out on a lot of other valuable utility these support characters would otherwise be able to provide to your team.

Inefficient Damage Output

One major issue these comps face is dealing with bosses with large HP pools or the time constraints of higher-level spiral abyss floors. The lack of efficiency really slows the combat down a lot and forces you to go through a much higher number of rotations than what you would generally have to do with a balanced team.

Teams That Are Built With Low-Tier Characters Only

5

We think this is the most common sense choice to be made here. Being a low-tier character in Genshin Impact doesn't immediately disqualify them from being useful because you have a variety of other characters playing roles that help support the team as a whole.

However, this changes completely when your team is comprised of only the weakest characters in the game without any thought for synergy. Normally you would have other meta-relevant characters in your team who can provide great damage or assist with some of the best support in the game to let them shine. Unfortunately, once again, when you remove this utility, you are left behind with a group of bad characters.

Realistic Expectations

This is not to say that trying to build teams with only low-tier characters is bad for any reason; if that's what makes you happy, go ahead. Just be realistic because the performance you will receive will be highly sub-par. A lack of decent rotations and element synergy will cripple your ability to engage with the combat meaningfully.

While we may see some players showcase extremely high numbers with these supposedly bad characters, this is generally only possible due to endgame players' compelling artifacts and weapons. These serve as powerful crutches for these characters, and this method of teambuilding is not something we could recommend to players in lower AR levels.

Chongyun With Any Electro DPS

6

As mentioned earlier, this is one of the notorious anti-synergies for which we will be naming a particular character. And that character is Chongyun.

One thing that needs to be understood for this is Chongyun being the Electro DPS killer. Do not use Chongyun in any team where you want to rely on the superconduct elemental reaction.

Elemental Skill

Let us explain; most people think that you can use superconduct to get the 40% physical damage reduction after using Chongyun's E and then deal massive amounts of damage with your electro DPS character.

7

However, this is not what happens. Let's take a look at Chongyun's elemental skill.

"Chongyun strikes the ground with his greatsword, causing a Cryo explosion in a circular AoE in front of him that deals Cryo DMG.

After a short delay, the cold air created by the Cryo explosion will coalesce into a Chonghua Frost Field, within which all Sword, Claymore, and Polearm-wielding characters' weapons will be infused with Cryo."

The important point to note is the last half, which states that all subsequent damage from melee weapons is converted to cryo. This means that any character that will go for follow-up damage will not trigger elemental reactions from their normal or charged attacks.

Waste Of Elemental Reactions

You lose out on all the potential elemental reactions you would otherwise be triggering. Also, since cryo damage is elemental and separate from physical damage, you also lose out on all the physical damage buffs that may be on your character.

This is not to say that Chongyun is a bad character by any means, but he should be kept far away from superconduct comps as these would be some of the most inefficient and worst teams in Genshin Impact.

We hope this guide helped you learn about some of the major don't of teambuilding and will aid you in avoiding these mistakes. If you value efficiency, you should consider many factors before you finalize the group of characters you choose to invest your time and resin in. Good luck, and we'll see you in the following guide.
