Everything You Need To Know About Pigs In Minecraft

Pigs are a big part of Minecraft. They're one of the first animals you'll encounter and one of the most useful during the earliest points in the game. Pigs are an excellent source of food, which you can rely on for the majority of your playthrough.

In this article, we'll cover everything you need to know about Minecraft pigs. So the next time you play Minecraft, you know what you should and shouldn't do when encountering them.

Where do pigs spawn in Minecraft?

Pigs are one of the most common mobs in Minecraft. They spawn in almost every biome in the game besides:

  • Snowy plains
  • Meadows
  • Wooded badlands

1

In order for them to spawn naturally, there must be at least a light level of 9 or more. They mostly spawn in groups of 4 or more. Pigs can also spawn in certain structures in villages, such as the village garden plots, but a pig will never spawn with a saddle on.

What can you get from a Minecraft pig?

A pig in Minecraft is one of the most useful animals in the game because of its drops. Pig drops include:

  • Raw Porkchops
  • XP orbs

Pork chops are one of the best food items in the game, and the pig is the only Overworld animal that drops it. They can also be useful to farm large amounts of experience points.

How to get pork chops from a pig

In most cases, a pig will drop from 1 to 3 raw porkchops. The only problem is that you'll have to cook them before eating them, and that can sometimes take a lot of time. The best alternative is to have a fire aspect sword because when you immediately kill a pig after you set it on fire, it will drop 1 to 3 cooked pork chops.

If you want more drops from them, the best to do that is to enchant your sword with the looting enchantment. As with Looting III, you'll be able to get from 1 to 6 pork chops from a single pig.

How to get XP orbs from a pig

There are two ways to get XP orbs from a pig. The first one is to kill it, which will guarantee you a drop of 1 to 3 XP orbs, or you can just breed them to get a drop of 1 to 7 XP orbs, which is more profitable since you're not losing a pig in the process.

How to breed pigs in Minecraft?

If you want to make baby pigs, you'll first have to breed two pigs. You can do that with various sorts of food items such as:

  • Carrots
  • Potatoes
  • Beetroots

2

The process of breeding is pretty simple. Here's all you need to do:

  1. Find two adult pigs and get them close together
  2. Approach them with one of the food items from above
  3. Right-click both of them until the hearts start showing

And once you do that, a baby piglet will come out, and after a short amount of time, the baby pig will become an adult pig! You'll be able to feed pigs again after about 5 minutes - the same goes for all the animals in Minecraft.

Traveling with your Minecraft pigs

There are three ways with which you can transport a pig to wherever you want to. As sometimes you'll need to transfer them from one place to another, it's best to know how to do so.

Leading a Minecraft pig with food

This is the easiest and most common way to make a pig follow you, but it can be annoying as the pigs can easily get disoriented if you're too fast.

To lead them with food, all you need to do is:

  1. Get some potatoes/carrots/beetroots
  2. Show the pig you have its favorite food in your hand
  3. Wait until it gets attracted to it

When you get the pig's attention, it will start to follow you, but they're very slow animals, so you'll have to have a lot of patience. This method isn't the best for long relations.

Steering a Minecraft pig with a lead

The easiest way to transport a Minecraft pig is by using a lead. The only problem is that the lead is not accessible to the early game, as you need slime balls to create it.

But to leash a cow with a lead, all you need to do is:

  1. Put the lead in your hand
  2. Right-click with lead on the pig

That way, you'll tie the pig, and then you'll be able to drag it around anywhere with you. Just don't be too fast for the pig, as the lead can break during a lot of tension.

Riding a Minecraft pig with a carrot on a stick

Did you know you can ride pigs in Minecraft? Pig riding has to be the most fun way to transport a pig, as it's one of the few animals you can actually put a saddle on and ride.

It may sound difficult at first, but all you need to do is:

  1. Craft a carrot on a stick
  2. Put a saddle on a pig you want to ride
  3. Sit on a pig while holding the carrot on a stick in your hand

3

You'll then see the pig going in the direction where you're aiming with the carrot on the stick. To make it go faster, right-click the carrot on a stick in your hand, and the pig will slowly increase its speed as you use it more and more.

After a couple of uses, the carrot on a stick will break, so make sure to get a couple of them if you want to travel long distances with a pig!

Are pigs hostile?

Minecraft pigs are a passive mob that'll never attack the player, as they're incapable of doing so. When you hit them, they'll just panic and start running away from the player. They're pretty easy to kill, as they have 5 hearts or 10 health points.
