How Many Channels Can A Discord Server Have? [Answered]

Maximum Number Of Channels In A Discord Server

The maximum number of channels a Discord server can have is 500. The limit of 500 channels includes both voice and text channels, so you cannot have 500 voice channels and 500 text channels in one server.

Though you can Nitro Boost a server, boosted servers will not get extra limits and are still capped at 500 channels. The same applies for a new Discord server too.

Maximum Number Of Categories In A Discord Server

Categories on Discord are used to divide channels to keep them neat and tidy, so I thought it was relevant to include this information in this article. The category limit in a Discord server is 50.

Discord Categories

On average, you can have ten channels under one category before you reach the maximum limit.

Can You Increase The Maximum Channels On Your Server?

The answer is yes, you can. Discord servers with 10,000 or more members become eligible to request an increase in server channel limits. However, there are a few more requirements before a server owner can send in their request:

  • The server must have 10,000+ members.

  • The server must have a proper, active moderator team and have proper rules channels and guidelines.

  • The server must have a new member retention rate of 10% or higher.

  • The server must ensure NSFW content is sent to NSFW channels only.

  • The server must not have unresolved issues with Discord’s Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.

10000+ members

Once all the requirements are met, the server owner can apply for a member and channel limit increase to Discord’s official website.

Is The Regular Discord Channel Limit Enough?

I personally think the limit of 500 channels and 50 categories is more than enough. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a server with more than 200 channels, so 500 is really pushing it.

However, upon doing some research, I found that most Discord users who have reached the 500-channel limit are involved in role-play servers, where the members would make multiple channels for each user or home.

Can you imagine how long you’d have to scroll to get through 500 channels! I’m sure 500 channels would make a server extremely laggy, which is probably why Discord put a channel limit.
