How to Calculate Nether Portal Distance in Minecraft

When you try to get and calculate the distance traveled and Nether coordinates to the overworld, there are 2 ways to do so. It can be done by using a Minecraft Nether portal calculator or by calculating the nether portal distance yourself. It isn't all that hard to do it, so below you can see both ways considering how to calculate Nether distance in Minecraft!  

Get Distance Using Minecraft Nether Portal Calculator

The first and best way to get the Nether coordinates and distance in Minecraft is by using an online Nether Portal calculator. If you've wanted to use one, there's a Nether portal calculator by MaximumFX. Just make sure you don't type the X, Y, and Z coordinates in the wrong place to not mess it up!

Calculate Nether Portal Distance Yourself

Another way you can calculate the distance between a Nether portal frame and overworld portals is by doing the math yourself. All you'll have to do is multiply the X and Z coordinates by 8. Basically for every 1 block traveled in the Nether, you'll go 8 blocks in the overworld. Besides the X and Z coordinates, the Y coordinate will try to stay the same when the Nether portal frame is created in the overworld.

For example let's take 10, 77, and 30 as the X, Y, and Z coordinates in the Nether dimension. When you travel to the overworld through the Nether portal frame, you multiply the X and Z coordinates by 8 which comes up to 80 and 240 respectively, while the Y coordinate will remain at 77. Now you can go on your search to get and craft netherite ingots without losing your direction!

The same works in reverse if you divide the coordinates. So if the X and Z coordinates at the overworld portal are 80 and 240, divide them by 8 and you'll get the coordinates in the Nether that are 10 and 30. All of these overworld and Nether coordinates might not be 100% correct, but they'll be very close!

How to Travel Faster With Nether Portals in Minecraft

If you didn't notice, traveling in the Nether is 8 times faster than in the overworld. So what you can do is make multiple portals in the Nether linked to different overworld locations by calculating the distance to travel faster to them!

But do keep in mind that if the corresponding Nether portal is too close to another one, they can lead to the same overworld portal. This will just waste your resources while you're trying to travel far away or find and craft blaze powder. So make sure to give them their distance to not link Nether portals which will teleport you to the same location in the overworld.
