The 10 Best Dragon type Pokémon [Ranked Best to Worst!]

1 /10

Rayquaza

The mascot Pokémon for Pokémon Emerald, Rayquaza is one of the strongest Dragon Pokemon and one of the most popular Dragon type Pokemon as well! This powerful Pokemon can even Mega Evolve into Mega Rayquaza, a truly monstrous power-up!

Rayquaza

When Rayquaza learns Dragon type move Dragon Ascent it can Mega Evolve into seriously snazzy Mega Rayquaza. This Pokemon packs a real punch with Dragon type moves.

Mega Rayquaza

It's one of the best Dragon type Pokemon because of its strength, its impressive stats, and its major importance to Pokemon world lore. Not only the best Dragon type Pokemon, Rayquaza is also one of the best Pokémon of all time.

2 /10

Garchomp

No list of the best Dragon type Pokemon is complete without Garchomp. This Pokémon was first introduced in Pokémon Diamond/Pearl and was used by the beloved and challenging Champion of the Sinnoh region, Cynthia.

Garchomp

This Dragon/Ground dual-type Pokémon boasts a complete immunity to Electric-type moves, and with both high Attack and Speed stats, it can hit fast and hard.

And it looks pretty cool, too.

Garchomp is a solid choice in competitive and casual play, and in formats which support this it can even Mega Evolve into Mega Garchomp.

Mega Garchomp

Sporting moves such as Earthquake and Dragon Claw, Garchomp is a real powerhouse. Its objectively great stats, typing, and its popularity with the fans bring it in at number 2 on this list, beating out many other Dragon types to the penultimate spot!

3 /10

Mega Charizard X

Although clearly a dragon, Charizard wasn't a Dragon type Pokemon until it got its version exclusive Mega Evolution in Pokémon X.

No longer a Fire type Pokemon, Mega Charizard X now gets same type attack bonus with Dragon type attacks like Dragon Claw or Dragon Pulse.

Mega Charizard X

Mega Charizard X is a powerful Dragon type Pokemon. As a Mega Form it's one of the most popular, and gives a major boost to an already super recognizable Pokémon! Mega Charizard X is a suitable Mega Evolved form for Charizard - and for a spot on this list!

Charizard is also one of the best Fire type Pokemon!

4 /10

Dracovish

Dracovish might seem like an odd choice for a list like this, what with its strange hybrid design and not obviously powerful base stat total.

But Dracovish has seen major success in competitive play due to its signature attack, Fishious Rend. This one move is insanely strong.

Dracovish

Fishious Rend is an already powerful attack with a base power of 85 and an accuracy rating of 100%, but if the user attacks first, its power doubles to 170! The Ability Strong Jaw boosts the move's power by a further 50%

So despite its lackluster stats and strange design, Dracovish is an absolute beast that was even banned in some competitive play!

That’s why it’s easily one of the best Dragon Pokémon!

5 /10

Dragapult

Dragapult is a Dragon/Ghost dual-type Pokémon introduced in Pokemon Sword/Shield.

Consistent with its design as a jetfighter, Dragapult is a speedy attacker with an excellent Attack stat and a good Special Attack stat, too! A pseudo-legendary Pokemon, its Ghost typing makes this Pokémon immune to Normal and Fighting-type moves!

This list of the best type combinations is a must-read for fans of type combos!

Dragapult

Its signature attack, Dragon Darts. Dragon Darts is a physical attack with a base power of only 50, but it hits twice, giving it an effective base power of 100! With moves like Draco Meteor and its great speed stat, Dragapult hits hard and fast.

This makes Dragapult a stylish and effective choice in casual or competitive play.

6 /10

Roaring Moon

Roaring Moon is a Paradox Pokémon, a special kind of Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Scarlet/Violet. This Pokémon is the right amount of cool and useful to have something for everyone.

Roaring Moon is said to be an ancient form of the Pokémon Salamence and is a Dragon/Dark dual-type Pokémon. Roaring Moon is a popular choice in Tera Raids due to its typing, its great stats, and of course, its excellent design.

Roaring Moon

With visuals similar to Salamence and its Mega Salamence form, Roaring Moon is just the right combination of new and nostalgic to be a truly winning design.

Its Protosynthesis Ability boosts its most powerful stat while in harsh sunlight or if the Pokémon is holding a Booster Energy, which means it pairs well with Koraidon.

Because of this and its strong base stat total, Roaring Moon is a powerful physical attacker that packs a real punch in a fight.

7 /10

Miraidon

Miraidon is the mascot Pokémon for Pokémon Violet and is an Electric/Dragon dual-type Pokémon which resembles a floating motorcycle. If that motorcycle was also a dragon. With a futuristic and fun design, it surely deserves a spot on this list of best Dragon type Pokemon!

Miraidon Ultimate Mode

This Legendary Pokemon has great stats all-around. Its slightly lower Attack stat means it’s better suited as a special attacker.

Its great stats make it a good choice for Tera Raids and its Ability Hadron Drive works well with Paradox Pokémon possessing the Quark Drive Ability.

Not only that, the Hadron Drive ability creates Electric Terrain. This powers up all Electric-type moves and boosts Miraidon’s Special Attack stat while in Electric Terrain!

8 /10

Tatsugiri

On its own, this little fish-like Dragon type isn’t much of a powerhouse (it is cute, though!). With a base stat total of only 475, this Pokémon is not an obvious choice for competitive play even with its powerful Special Attack stat.

Tatsugiri Curly Form

But together with partner Pokémon Dondozo, Tatsugiri packs a punch, partly due to its Commander Ability. Paired with Dondozo in Double Battles Tasugiri is a solid choice as its Ability Commander allows it to enter its partner’s mouth.

Dondozo

This boosts the power of Dondozo’s Order Up attack, making it a very useful support! Its high Special Attack stat means it can help out with damage, too. Its low stats otherwise make it a bit of a glass cannon, but with its beefier pal Dondozo to help it, it’s one of the best Dragon types.

9 /10

Goodra

Goodra is a pure Dragon type Pokemon introduced during Pokémon X/Y. This gooey, slug-like pseudo-legendary Pokemon has a solid Special Defense stat and is a powerful attacker to boot.

Goodra

With a base stat total of 600, Goodra is a strong Dragon type Pokémon. Its high Special Defense means it’s capable of taking hits, and its high Attack and Special Attack stats means it can fight back, too.

Its Ability Sap Sipper gives it an immunity to Grass-type moves including moves such as Spore, Sleep Powder, and Leech Seed, boosting its defensive utility even further! With a good movepool including Draco Meteor, Earthquake, and Thunderbolt, Goodra is a fantastic choice!

This popular Pokémon was even given an alternative form in Pokémon Legends Arceus.

10 /10

Altaria

Altaria is a Dragon and Flying type Pokemon introduced in Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire. Its base stat total of 490 means it isn’t an especially heavy hitter, but its cute design and nice typing has made it a fan favorite.

Altaria

Altaria can Mega Evolve into the only Dragon type Pokemon to have a secondary Fairy type, Mega Altaria. This unique type combination gives it same type attack bonus for Fairy type moves! The Fairy type gives Mega Altaria an immunity to its weakness, Dragon type, too!

Mega Altaria even won itself a spot on this list of the best Fairy type Pokemon, too!
