How To Effectively Refund a Game on Steam [Step-by-Step]

How do I Get a Refund for a Game on Steam?

First of all, you must know there are rules when it comes to what games you can refund on Steam before you uninstall them. Any game is eligible for a Steam refund if it's been played for less than 2 hours, and a refund is requested within 14 days of when it was purchased. Nevertheless, Steam believes anything is eligible for a refund if the reasoning behind it is valid and justifiable.

So it doesn't hurt to try and refund your Steam game purchase, and below you'll see the steps on how to do it:

  1. Open up Steam, and on top hover your mouse over the "Help" section and click on "Steam Support"
  2. Click on "Purchases" and select the "View complete purchasing history" option
  3. Find the game you want a refund for and click it
  4. Select the "I would like a refund" option and then "I'd like to request a refund"
  5. Check what you're refunding and choose the reason from the drop-down menus
  6. Write why you want a refund in the "Notes section" and click on "Submit request"

How to Refund a Game on Steam

The exact process applies if you want to request a Steam refund on a browser. Head to the Steam Help website, log in to your account, and continue from the second step above.

Also once you're on the refund form page for the game you've selected, Steam will tell you whether it can be refunded with all rules followed. If it has an "X" mark, then you've either played the game for over 2 hours, 14 days have passed since the purchase happened, or the content is not refundable at all.

If you saw these timing rules and they don't apply to the game you want to refund, don't be scared! A refund can be requested for any game, but you must have a valid reason for why you're requesting it so Steam can review it and fulfill it. One valid reason for this can be if your friends or family (like your children) accidentally spent money from your precious credit card and you've just noticed it a while later.

Finally, there are games that use Valve's VAC anti-cheat system. If you've been banned by VAC on the game you want a refund for, then you won't be available to request it, no matter how old your account is.

What Other Steam Content is Eligible for a Refund?

Besides the best Steam games, refunds are not limited only to them. Below's a list of all content that can be bought and refunded on Steam:

Content bought with Keys, Gift Cards, or Wallet CodesNoAlmost everything is refundable if it's directly bought on Steam, which doesn't include keys
In-game purchasesYesRefundable within 48 hours if it's by Valve. Other game developers have to confirm in-game purchase refunds

Bundles

YesRefund has to be requested within 14 days of purchase, and time used on all bundle content cannot exceed 2 hours
