How to get new characters in Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is a gacha game at its core and it is one of the best out there. Speaking as F2P players ourselves, Genshin Impact gives you a lot of opportunities to get new characters without having to spend a dime. It is extremely accommodating to free genshin players and not only that, it is very easy to have a really good team composition with a mix of five star and four star characters.

There are many ways that you could go about building yourself a solid team of playable characters as there are multiple ways to actually get characters in Genshin Impact.

Wishes

Wishes are the primary way to get characters in Genshin Impact. The whole wishing system is just like any other gacha system which means that you unlock characters by playing the odds. There are different ways you can pull for characters in Genshin Impact and these are dependent on the banner that you pull on.

Basically, there are three banners which you can wish on. The first is the standard wish banner which has the same five star characters through all updates. The second wish banner has a featured character(s) which is only available for a limited time. The third is the weapon banner which, as the name implies, is all about weapons.

In order to get characters in Genshin Impact you will have to wish on the character banners specifically although it is still possible to get four star characters through the weapon banner as well. It is a long shot though so you're better off just wishing on the character banners.

You should also keep in mind which banners to spend your Genshin Impact primogems on. The banner that uses intertwined fates is preferable as it always has limited time five star characters which are almost always better than any found in the standard wish banner.

The standard wish banner also has its use as the game often gives out free acquaint fates through the battle pass, region unlocks, and limited time events. The drops for this banner can be seen in the game and as of version 3.1 includes 6 five star characters up for grabs. These include:

• Diluc
• Mona
• Keqing
• Jean
• Qiqi
• Tighnari

As you can see these characters make up almost all of the elements in the game save for Geo. There is currently no five star Geo character in the standard banner. All of the characters in this banner have specific purposes and can be a good addition to any team depending on which role you put them in.

Genshin Impact's wish system has certain safeguards in the form of the pity system which is an integral part of wishing and should be known by any person playing the game. The way the pity system works is that you will get a four star character or weapon every 10 pulls and a five star character or weapon every 90 pulls. That much is set in stone for the character banners whereas the pity for the five star in the weapon banner stands lower at 80.

The pity system comes into play frequently but you will often get lucky, especially once you go past 70 wishes. There is a fair bit of mathematics and probability that goes into calculating odds for five-star pulls but to put it simply, the more you wish on a certain banner the more likely it is that you get what you want from it.

The most important thing to keep in mind when wishing is choosing which banner to save primogems on and on which to spend them. Not all characters in Genshin Impact are created equal and some will be more useful than others. It all depends on who you already have, who you have built, and who you want in your party.

Paimon's Bargains

Paimon's Bargains can be found in the shop section of the menu and have a lot of great deals for old and new players alike. There are two things that are extremely important in the shop. The first is the Masterless Stardust shop which allows you to purchase items using the stardust that you get from wishing. In this particular shop you can get 5 Acquaint fates and 5 Intertwined fates every month for 750 stardust.

You can also buy characters in genshin impact from this shop. Every month there is a rotation of a few characters which can be bought with Masterless Starglitter. This premium currency can also be used to buy more wishes as well as weapons so make sure to spend it wisely.

Events

One of the main appeals of Genshin Impact is the quality and quantity of events that come out through each update. Most people participate in these events to earn primogems but there are a few rare ones in which you can also unlock a free character.

These events are a great way to unlock characters or getting more constellations for them. Genshin Impact also has a habit of including useful four star characters in the event such as Fischl, Bennet, and Collei. Very rarely the game also gives out a five star character and as of yet there has been only one; Aloy in a crossover event with Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Chances of a character event happening is not rare as every major update is usually accompanied by one and they can be a real boon for early game players as it can give them a chance to obtain new characters.

Free Characters

There are certain free characters that you get through the course of the game. These include the main character, Amber, Kaeya, Lisa, Barbara, and Xiangling. The free characters in genshin impact are very useful for new players as they can help you progress easily.

All of the free characters can be obtained through just playing the game. Players start off with the main character and get Amber, Kaeya, and Lisa through the initial quests and at the end of Sparks Amongst The Pages you should have a full team. To unlock Barbara you will need to participate in the Baptism of Song event which is unlocked once you reach Adventure Rank 18. Her elemental skill is particularly useful as it heals whoever is on field.

Xiangling is one of the more useful characters in genshin impact, especially for new players as she can act as a main DPS very easily. She is unlocked by completing Floor 3 Chamber 3 of the Spiral Abyss. The Spiral Abyss is locked until Adventure Rank 20 so to obtain her you will need to grind story quests for a bit.

Investing Time

Don't be disheartened if you don't have a SS team because you need to invest time into Genshin Impact if you want to have a strong roster. The more you play the game the more characters you will end up unlocking as you'll be able to earn more primogems and spend them on who you want.

Playing Genshin Impact is a marathon not a sprint so if you do end up spending a lot of time on it you'll soon find that you'll get all the characters you want without spending any money. If you want to speed up the process though you can invest in smart purchases like Genesis Crystals for the Battle Pass or purchasing fates for a certain five star character that you really want.
