The 10 Pokemon Best Against Dragon Type Pokemon [Ranked]

1 /10

Zacian

Zacian is a real powerhouse of a Pokemon thanks to its insane stat spread, great offensive and defensive typing, and its flexible movepool. One of the best wolf Pokemon, Zacian has an awful lot to bring to any table.

Featuring a rugged and battlescarred design in its Hero of Many Battles form, along with a snazzy and majestic Crowned Hero form, Zacian is also the best counter to Dragon type Pokémon.

Zacian Crowned Sword

Gaining the Steel typing in its Crowned Hero form, Zacian is a powerful Legendary Pokémon with great options for super effective attacks against Dragon type Pokémon.

Immune to Dragon type moves and to Poison type moves, Zacian has an array of powerful Fairy type moves like Play Rough it can use to completely destroy Dragon type Pokémon, along with Ice Fang, a nifty Ice type move that covers another one of the Dragon type weaknesses.

Zacian gets a good toolkit and good access to moves of other Pokémon types, meaning it's well suited to taking on pure Dragon type Pokémon as well as dual type Dragons. Easily the greatest counter to Dragons.

Gardevoir

A much beloved Pokemon since its introduction in Generation III, Gardevoir became a Fairy type Pokémon in Generation VI. As Fairy type Pokémon are completely immune to Dragon type attacks Gardevoir is a great choice in battle against many Dragon Pokémon.

Gardevoir

Using powerful Fairy moves like Dazzling Gleam or Moonblast Gardevoir can wreck pretty much all the Dragon type Pokémon, but it also gets access to Ice type attacks like Icy Wind and Ice Punch for a little bit more utility.

And all this and an elegant Mega Evolution into Mega Gardevoir! Gardevoir has great options for dealing double damage thanks to its great typing and varied movepool, while taking no damage at all from Dragon moves.

Azumarill

One of the best shiny Pokemon, Azumarill is a cute little Fairy and Water type Pokemon that's surprisingly useful in a range of scenarios. Featuring one of the best Abilities, Huge Power, Azumarill literally slaps hard with physical moves.

And it gets great access to them too, as it's capable of using Fairy moves like Play Rough and Ice attacks like Ice Punch to effectively target Dragon type weaknesses.

Azumarill

Azumarill might look cute and adorable - and it is - but it's so much more than that. It's a real terror in battle, great against Pure Dragon type Pokémon or dual types like Garchomp, a Dragon/Ground type Pokemon.

It's got great options for super effective damage and the ability to really use them. All this and an immunity to Dragon moves!

4 /10

Primarina

The final evolution of Water type starter Pokémon Popplio, Primarina is an elegant and sophisticated Pokemon with design influences from both sea lions and mermaids.

But make no mistake, despite Primarina's good looks and dainty style it's a real powerhouse of a Pokémon, especially against Dragon type Pokémon.

Primarina

Thanks to its secondary Fairy typing Primarina is immune to Dragon type attacks while getting STAB for extra super effective damage against them.

With a dazzling array of powerful Fairy and Ice type attacks Primarina strikes fear into the hearts of Dragon type Pokémon, and does it all while looking absolutely fabulous.

5 /10

Alolan Ninetales

An Alolan regional variant form of Ninetales, Alolan Ninetales is able to easily and effectively exploit Dragon type weaknesses to deal double damage to Dragon type Pokémon.

This ethereally beautiful and elegant fox Pokemon gets great access to Fairy and Ice attacks like Dazzling Gleam and Ice Beam, while having a good Speed stat too.

Alolan Ninetales

And its dual typing seems designed to strike fear into the hearts of Dragon Pokémon, as it has an immunity and STAB for two of the Dragon type weaknesses.

With nothing to fear from Dragon type moves and good speed, Alolan Ninetales is a superior and stylish choice in battle.

And for me, its design is much better than Kantonian Ninetales. It just looks mysterious and ethereal, fitting its lore.

6 /10

Clefable

Being a pure Fairy Pokemon, Clefable is a great counter to Dragons because it has only two weaknesses, to Poison and Steel, while being immune to Dragon moves.

Its movepool is nice too, with good access to Fairy and Ice type attacks like Moonblast and Ice Beam.

Clefable

Its Ability, Magic Guard, is also pretty nice, since it can only take direct damage. This makes Clefable a great choice against any Pokemon with the Dragon typing, but also against Fighting type or Dark type Pokemon too.

7 /10

Hatterene

An elegant and high-strung forest witch, Hatterene is a powerful Pokémon that's absolutely amazing at taking on Dragon types. With an immunity to Dragon moves, and a powerful roster of Fairy attacks to hit back with, Hatterene slaps hard.

Hatterene

With a unique look and great stats, Hatterene is always a good choice and it's one of the best Fairy Pokémon, but it's especially great against Dragon types.

She even has an exclusive Gigantamax form which really takes her design to literally new heights!

Hisuian Goodra

Hisuian Goodra can be a good, unconventional choice for fighting its fellow Dragon types thanks to its secondary Steel type.

As a pseudo-Legendary Pokémon Hisuian Goodra has a great stat spread, and its movepool includes Dragon and Ice type moves, meaning it has some brilliant options for facing down Dragon types.

Hisuian Goodra

But more than that, Hisuian Goodra's Steel typing gives it some extra defensiveness against Fairy type Pokemon, as Fairy type Pokémon are weak to Steel attacks.

Not only that, but since Dragon deals only half damage to Steel Pokemon, this gives Hisuian Goodra more defensive utility against Dragon type attacks, since they hit it for normal damage.

This means that Hisuian Goodra, despite its weird look as a kind of metallic snail-dragon, has some good utility to go with its unique look. As type combinations go, this one is pretty nice, helping Hisuian Goodra eliminate some of its weak points.

Dragon/Steel is a great type, and Hisuian Goodra uses it well!

And personally, I think it looks better as a snail than it does as a slug. Has a bit more flair.

9 /10

Mega Altaria

The only Dragon/Fairy type Pokémon in existence, Mega Altaria can be a good choice for facing its fellow Dragon Pokémon in battle.

Inheriting the Fairy type immunity to Dragon moves, Mega Altaria gets Ice, Dragon, and Fairy type attacks to hit Dragon type Pokémon for every single one of the Dragon type Pokémon weaknesses.

Dragon/Fairy is just that good!

Mega Altaria

Especially good because of its immunity to Dragon moves and its STAB for both Dragon and Fairy. This happy and cute cloud-like Pokémon is a fantastic option for battling Dragons, held back only because it's exclusive to formats where Mega Evolution is allowed.

But with its ability to target all three weaknesses, Altaria is absolutely worth a go in formats that support Mega Evolution.

10 /10

Lapras

Lapras is a good, often overlooked choice in battle against Dragon type Pokémon. Being an Ice type it gets STAB for Ice moves like Ice Beam, perfect against pure Dragon types and other Dragons too.

But not only does Lapras get those powerful Ice attacks, it can use the Dragon type attack Dragon Pulse as well to hit Dragon types where it hurts!

Lapras

This gives it a little bit of flexibility, as it can hit even Dragons like Baxcalibur for super effective damage even without Fairy moves.

Plus it has a beautiful yet oddly menacing Gigantamax form!
