Restart Discord Using Task Manager
The first and easiest fix is to restart the Discord process on your Task Manager. Sometimes, your Discord may not function properly, and a hard restart using the Task Manager is worth a shot.
Here’s how you do it:
Hit your Windows key and search for Task Manager, or hold Ctrl + Shift + Esc
Task Manager should already be on the Processes tab
In the Processes tab, right-click on Discord and click End Task
Now, Discord will close. All you need to do is relaunch the application
Doing this will give Discord a hard restart and can be a solution to frequent crashes.
Clear Your Discord Cache Files
Another reason why Discord may not be functioning properly is due to corrupted files or cache data. This may sound bad, but the solution is quite simple: clear your Discord cache.
Here’s a guide on how you can do that:
Hit your Windows key and search for Run, or hold the Windows key + R
This will open the Run menu
Type in %appdata%/discord and hit Enter
You will be led to the Discord local storage folder
Select the Cache, Code Cache, and GPU Cache folders
Delete all three cache folders
All your Discord cache files will be cleared by deleting these three folders, including any potentially corrupted ones.
Turn Off Discord Hardware Acceleration
Discord automatically turns on the Hardware Acceleration setting, making Discord use more of your GPU. In many cases, your GPU may not be strong enough to enable this setting, causing Discord crashes.
To disable Hardware Acceleration follow the steps below:
On Discord, go to your Settings menu
Under the App Settings section, click on Advanced
Uncheck the Hardware Acceleration option
Discord will restart with Hardware Acceleration disabled
This method is one of the most effective fixes to the Discord crashing issue, but if it still hasn’t worked for you, let’s continue.
Change Discord Audio Subsystem To Legacy
Unlike the previous method, your Discord may not function properly because of audio devices rather than GPU. If anything like this happens, the easy fix is to change your Discord audio subsystem to Legacy Mode.
Follow the steps below:
On Discord, go to your Settings menu
Under the App Settings section, click on Voice & Video
Scroll down until you see the Audio Subsystem setting
Change it from Standard to Legacy
Confirm the changes
This method isn’t the most effective fix but it has worked for some people. You can always revert the changes if this doesn’t solve the problem.
Disable All Discord Keybinds
On Discord, users can set keybind shortcuts to perform various actions like Muting or Deafening themselves in a call. However, many users reported that their Discord freezes or crashes when they use the keybind.
If you have this issue, I suggest disabling all your keybinds. Here’s how:
On Discord, go to your Settings menu
Under the App Settings section, click on Keybinds
You will see a list of all your Keybinds
For each keybind, hover your mouse to the top-right corner and click the delete button
Repeat the process until all keybinds have been deleted
After doing this, you can restart Discord with your Task Manager, and see if the issue still stands.
Update Discord To Its Latest Version
Sometimes, the Discord crashing and freezing issue might not come from your end but could be due to Discord being out-of-date. It wouldn’t hurt to ensure that Discord is updated.
You can update your Discord by following these steps:
Open your Hidden Icons on the right side of your Taskbar
Right-click on the Discord icon
Click on Check for Updates…
Your computer will automatically search for updates and install them if any
The process is automatic, so just give your computer some time.
Turn Off Compatibility Mode On Discord
Discord crashing can be caused due to compatibility issues, so turning off compatibility mode on Discord can be an effective fix to the problem.
You can turn off compatibility mode like this:
End the Discord process using the Task Manager
Then, locate your Discord desktop shortcut and right-click on it
Go to Properties
In Discord Properties, go to the Compatibility menu
Under Compatibility mode, go ahead and uncheck Run this program in compatibility mode
Then, save your changes by pressing Apply and OK
If you’ve reached this point and your Discord is still having issues, we have one last fix to suggest.
Uninstall And Reinstall Discord
The last resort fix is to uninstall the Discord app and reinstall it from the official website. This method will ensure that Discord will come fresh with no cache files and will be up to date.
To uninstall and reinstall Discord, perform these steps:
Hit your Windows key and type in Add or remove programs
Search for Discord using the Search bar at the top
Once you’ve found Discord, click on the three dots and hit Uninstall
Confirm the uninstallation of Discord and wait until it is finished
Then, go to the official Discord website and download the application again
If uninstalling and reinstalling Discord does not solve your problem, it is likely a hardware issue, and your computer is having problems.
