How To Make Someone A Moderator On Discord [Step-By-Step]

To appoint someone as a Moderator, the first step is to create the Moderator role in your Discord server. Note that you must be the Server Owner or a person with Administrator powers to do this!

Once you’ve made the role, you can assign server members to the role and give them Mod powers! If you are running a big server, you might consider getting experienced Discord Moderators that get paid

Here’s a step by step guide on how to create the role and make someone a Moderator:

Go to Server Settings

The first step is to go to the Server Settings. In your selected server, click on the drop-down menu next to the server’s name.

Server Settings

A bunch of options will pop up, and you will click on the Server Settings button.

Creating The Moderator Role

Now that you’ve made it to the Server Settings, head over to the Roles menu. You can find this on the left side of your screen. Once you’re in the Roles section, click on Create Role. Here, we will create the Moderator role.

Creating Role

First, set the Role Name. If you want to follow the basics, simply name the role Moderator or Mod. You can name it anything you want, but it’s always good to be clear about the name of the role.

Role Name and Settings

You can also set the Role Color. Usually, I see Moderator roles use pink or light green colors, but again, feel free to choose any color.

Before we move on to the next section, I highly recommend turning on the “Display role members separately from online members” option.

Adding Moderator Permissions

Now we’re getting to the most important part: giving permissions. Moderators need power to manage servers such as banning or unbanning members from the Discord server. So, here’s where we can grant them these permissions.

You can adjust all the permissions under the Permission section, and I recommend making a rules channel in your Dicsord server so your Moderators and members will have a good idea of what they can and cannot do in the server.

Granting Permissions

Here are the permissions I recommend giving Moderators in your server for enforcing server rules:

General Server Permissions

  • View Channels

  • Manage Channels

  • Manage Roles

  • View Audit Log

  • Manage Server

Membership Permissions

  • Create Invite

  • Change Nickname

  • Manage Nicknames

  • Kick Members

  • Ban Members

  • Timeout Members

Text Channel Permissions

  • Create Public Threads

  • Use External Emoji

  • Use External Stickers

  • Mention @everyone, @here, and All Roles

  • Manage Messages

  • Manage Threads

  • Read Message History

  • Use Application Commands

Voice Channel Permissions

Event Permissions

  • Create Events

  • Manage Events

Once you're done, don't forget to save your changes! Remember that these permissions hold a lot of power in your server, so it’s important to only give the Moderator role to trusted people.

Granting The Moderator Role

Now that the entire Moderator role is set up, the final step is to give your selected people the Moderator role.

In the same Roles menu, head over to Manage Members. Now, you can click on the Add Members button to assign the role.

Managing Members

Alternatively, you can right-click the person’s name, and a menu with tons of options will show up. Here, hover your mouse on the Role option and grant them the Moderator role from there.
