There are only two modes you can play Fortnite split screen in — Duos and Squads. The rest of the Fortnite Battle Royale game modes do not currently support split screen.
Moreover, there are two types of consoles that allow Fortnite split screen, and these are only Xbox and PlayStation. Other devices like mobile devices, PCs, and the Nintendo Switch do not have support for split screen gaming in Fortnite. Thankfully, if you're a Nintendo Switch or mobile devices' player, you can still enjoy plenty of exclusive Fortnite skins.
To enable split screen in Fortnite, follow these easy steps:
- Navigate to the Fortnite main menu with one controller connected to your console.
- Connect a second controller to the same console.
- Player One needs to invite the second controller's player to sign into a secondary account with a linked Fortnite account.
- When Player Two signs in, they will join the lobby, and Fortnite split-screen will be automatically enabled.
Note that split screen will not work in the Fortnite main menu. The only way to confirm if split-screen is functioning correctly is by entering a game session of Fortnite Duos or Squads.
Fortnite Split Screen Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with split-screen not enabling automatically, check your internet connection. A stable internet connection is crucial for the split-screen feature to function properly. If your internet is weak or disconnected, the Fortnite split-screen mode may not work.
Another common issue could be different language settings; so, to utilize the split-screen function, both players must have the same language setting.
How Many Players Can Split Screen in Fortnite?
In Fortnite, only two players can play in split-screen mode. Unfortunately, forming a full four-person squad on one screen is not possible, likely due to limitations in screen size.
When using the split-screen feature, you may notice that the Fortnite split screen appears unusual, with small images creating dead space on the side of each player's screen. This design choice is made to ensure an equal aspect ratio for split-screen players, similar to that of players not using split screen. If Epic Games were to implement a four-person split screen, balancing the aspect ratio would become challenging without excessively shrinking each player's screen.
