The Hype Sold The Game

Remember the Cyberpunk 2077 teaser trailer, which was released back in 2013? It's been a while since then, isn't it? That teaser trailer has turned the gaming world upside down and made Cyberpunk 2077 one of the most anticipated games ever. The hype got even more prominent when Keanu Reeves (probably the most-liked actor of today) announced the game at E3 in 2018. And then, when it finally got fully released, everyone was bummed out because the CD Projekt Red had failed the players. So instead of one of the greatest games in history, we got the buggy, unoptimized mess that looks stunning. So how come Cyberpunk 2077 earned over $301 million in sales revenue?

A gorgeous-looking game, but without soul.

We'll answer that question with one single word - pre-orders. Before the game got released, there were over 8 million pre-orders on Steam only, not counting the other platforms. The main reason for this is the hype surrounding Cyberpunk 2077 and, later, the introduction of Keanu Reeves, which was an incredible marketing move by the CD Projekt Red.

However, many players regretted pre-ordering the game and wanted a refund, which cost CD Projekt Red over $51 million, which was nothing compared to how much they earned. The company that got famous for The Witcher series has undoubtedly set high standards, and gamers had high expectations. But maybe one of the reasons they failed to produce a perfect game was because they felt constant pressure from the start to make Cyberpunk 2077 even better than their past titles.

With everything taken into account, this entire situation should serve as a lesson to all the gamers - never get overhyped, or you might end up disappointed. And if you don't want to end up disappointed, check out the download size of DayZ and the download size of Overwatch 2 beta, whose download sizes are much smaller than of Cyberpunk 2077.
