How To Find a Treasure Chest in Minecraft [Best Way]

Where are Buried Treasure Chests Located in Minecraft?

The buried treasure chests most of the time are generated underground off the coast of beaches.

They'll usually be surrounded by sand and gravel. If you're going for a lucky approach trying to randomly find buried treasure chests, chances are you won't ever find the good treasures you're seeking!

So to precisely locate where treasure chests are located, you'll need a treasure map.

How to Find a Treasure Map in Minecraft

To find a Minecraft treasure map, you'll want to search for ocean ruins or shipwrecks.

They're located in deep sea waters, so you'll want to look for oceans, craft a boat, and locate shipwrecks and ocean ruins underwater.

Minecraft Ocean Ruins and Shipwreck

The chances of a treasure map appearing in a shipwreck and ocean ruins are different. Shipwrecks in particular can have up to 3 chests, and one of them has a 100% chance of containing a treasure map!

The treasure map should be located in a chest at the lowest point of the ship. Some shipwrecks though can be broken and have only 1 or 2 chests. Then the chances of finding a treasure map tend to be lower.

Ocean ruins on the other hand have a lower chance of containing a treasure map.

You'll have a 43.5% chance of finding a treasure map in an ocean ruin, meaning out of 10 found ocean ruins, at least 4 of them will contain a map!

The fastest way to locate these underwater structures is by using a potion of night vision. On average, it took players around 5-10 minutes to find ocean ruins and shipwrecks with this potion.

That time shouldn't be taken for granted, as the appearances of these structures depend on the Minecraft world seed.

How to Find Buried Treasure Chests Using Buried Treasure Maps

Once you find a buried treasure map, most likely it'll look like a buried map with a small white dot along the sides with a red "X" mark on it.

The "X" mark is where the buried treasures are located. North will always be on top of the map, so these are the directions you'd want to follow depending on where the white dot is located to get to the "X" mark":

  • If the white dot is located on the top, go South
  • If the white dot is located on the bottom, go North
  • If the white dot is located on the left, go East
  • If the white dot is located on the right, go West

You can see what direction you're heading in the Java edition by pressing F3 on your keyboard and seeing the "Facing" option on the left.

By moving your mouse left to right the facing option will change telling you whether you're facing south, north, east, or west. On the Bedrock edition, there's no way to see the direction you're going at the moment.

Minecraft Directions to Find Buried Treasure

Once you start getting closer to the buried treasure chest, the map will start getting clearer.

When the white dot appears on the map, it will become a little pointer making it easier to navigate to the chest.

Once you're directly on the "X" mark, there's a trick to finding the Minecraft buried treasure chest easier:

  1. Face yourself or the white pointer upward north on the map
  2. Directly move on top of the red X until the white pointer isn't visible anymore
  3. Move back ever so slightly until a little bit of white is shown from the pointer
  4. Dig down, the treasure chest should be very close or directly underneath you

Minecraft How to Find Buried Treasure Chest

There's lots of valuable items in the treasure chest you could find, including iron, gold, emeralds, and even diamonds.

They won't always appear in the chest, though one drop that's 100% guaranteed is the Heart of the Sea! Now all that's left to do is use the loot to defeat the Ender Dragon!
