Minecraft capes were rare add-on decorations to the characters of veteran Minecraft players with a lot of game experience, especially for the Java Edition. However, new players nowadays can get their own special cape.

You can get different styles of capes such as the pan cape in the Minecraft Bedrock Edition or various personal capes in the Minecraft Java Edition that you can use with your friends.

Here are the various ways you can get a Minecraft cape:

• Migrating from a Mojang account to a Microsoft account
• Buying Minecraft skin packs (Not for Minecraft Java Edition)
• Using mods

Attending Official Minecraft Events

One of the official ways of getting capes in Minecraft is to attend events hosted by Mojang or Microsoft. These events include the famous Minecraft Convention or MineCon held usually in the United States or the United Kingdom or, in recent ones, via livestream online.

Players who attended these events were given a free cape, also known as MineCon capes, as seen below. These are some of the official capes available.

Mojang announced back in 2020 that everyone in the Minecraft community that will migrate their accounts will receive a free cape. Migrating to a Microsoft account does not require you to change your Minecraft username.

The migration of accounts started in 2021. Since March 10, 2023, they have no longer allowed the use of Minecraft Java Edition unless you have already migrated your Mojang account to a Microsoft account.

Therefore, all those who purchased a Minecraft account (how to get a free account) before December 2020 are eligible to claim the migrator cape as long as they migrated their Mojang account to a Microsoft account.

Buying Skin Packs

Another method of getting Minecraft capes is buying them along with a certain skin pack in the Bedrock Edition of Minecraft. Unfortunately, Minecraft Java Edition players cannot buy any skin pack capes at the moment.

There are more than a dozen available skin packs in the Minecraft marketplace that can be purchased. This skin pack selection includes a Star Wars-themed pack, a cybertronic-themed pack, a seasonal pack, and so much more.

However, not all of the packs include a cape. Therefore, choose wisely!

The downside with this method is that it relies on real money to purchase a skin pack that has an included cape that you can equip for your character. Not everyone has the capacity to buy skins in the game, especially new and young players.

Nevertheless, there is still an alternative way to get capes in Minecraft.

Using Mods

The final alternative way to get a cape in Minecraft is by downloading mods such as OptiFine and Advanced Capes Mod and installing them to have your own custom capes.

Note: This requires some level of experience or skill to do so. Make sure to ask someone older or who has a lot of experience in Minecraft to teach you how to install mods or texture packs.

One of the most well-known Minecraft mods that has a built-in cape is OptiFine. This mod has been around for quite some time. The same mod is used by veteran players to improve the game's overall performance.

The mod comes with its own OptiFine cape that shows the initials of the mod, OF, as seen in the image below. 

They also allow further skin customization of the OptiFine cape, but you will need to donate at least 10 USD to edit it using their cape editor.
