Is Elo Boosting Illegal in League of Legends [Explained]

Is LoL Elo Boosting Illegal

The legality of elo boosting is different, depending on where you live. Elo boosting in League of Legends is completely legal if we take the definition of legal as being in accordance with the law.

Though in the League community, it's a sin worse than taking advantage of the best LoL cheese strats, or the cowardly LoL backdoor champions.

In other words, boosters won't be fined by a government authority, or get into any legal trouble. Still, Riot Games, as a corporation whose terms and conditions players agree to, have the full right to dispense game-related punishments if players are found in breach of the terms agreed to.

However, for players based in South Korea, elo boosting may just prove to be illegal. This is due to the fact that on the South Korean LoL server to create an online gaming account, players must use their real IDs. As such, account sharing goes into the realm of real-life lawbreaking.

Some claims state that the fines for Elo boosting in South Korea can go as high as 18,000 USD, or two years in jail!

Where is LoL Elo Boosting Legal

The terms and conditions players agree to when installing League of Legends don't explicitly state anything regarding elo boosting. In the rest of the world, aside from South Korea, elo boosting is legal and only a bannable offense in League of Legends, and the bans are grounded in those very same terms and conditions.

Riot Games simply ban accounts that are proven to have abused account sharing, which is forbidden by the terms and conditions. This way, they ban elo boosted accounts in a circumventing manner, and that is all they can do!

This means that, whether you are one of the elo boosters, or someone playing League who paid an elo booster to get elo boost your account, the biggest punishment you'll get is having the boosted account banned!

What is the Penalty for Elo Boosting in LoL

Of course, permanently banning accounts on the first rule infringement is not a good way of retaining players, so Riot Games implement a series of punishments before resorting to drastic measures.

  • 2 Week Account Suspension in League of Legends
  • Your Honor will drop to level 0. Honor unlocks some time after your penalty as long as you're showing signs of progress
  • Exclusion from receiving the current season's Ranked Rewards
  • Second time offenders will be permanently banned from League of Legends

Following this you'll just have to make a new account. Expect, of course, if your IP gets banned as well, though that happens rarely. It goes without saying that the banned player's account, won't get any LoL Mythic Essence refunded, or anything of the like.
