How to Make an AFK Gold Farm in Minecraft [Complete Guide]

Minecraft Gold Farm Java Edition: Items and Guide

This is the easiest and most efficient gold farm you can make in Minecraft Java edition, which will give you around 90-100 gold ingots per hour. And it requires you to go above the Nether roof. Before you go though, here are the required items for this gold farm in Minecraft:

Minecraft Gold Farm Needed Items

This farm also functions as sort of a mob farm since you'll be killing Zombie Piglins for the gold. In a survival world, it's recommended you bring some food, tools, and good armor to protect yourself, If you've got the required items, then below you can see how to make an easy Minecraft gold farm step-by-step!

1 /8

Go to the Nether Roof

The first step to creating this Minecraft gold farm is to make a portal and head to the Nether. There, you'll want to find a Nether Wastes biome, which is the normal one full of Nether Rack where Zombie Piglins spawn.

Then go and dig above until you reach bedrock. Press F3 and on the right find the "Targeted Block" option. Aim above and find a bedrock block until the F3 "Targeted Block" option says 127. Finally, place some ladders below that block, climb them, and throw an Ender Pearl in the above gap like below, and press Space to jump on the Nether roof!

Minecraft Jump to Nether Roof

It's recommended you instantly build a portal to the other world, so you can have a way in and out of the roof. So make sure you don't forget that Obsidian alongside flint and steel!

Place The Double Chests and Connect Hoppers

Next up you'll have to place 1 double chest and 2 more right in front of it. Then on top of the double chests in half, be it left or right, place 3 more double chests which you can do by pressing Shift to crouch. Below we chose the right side.

Minecraft Gold Farm Chest Hopper Placement

On the side on which you chose to place the top double chests, place connected hoppers on the below chests by crouching. Then connecting the top chests place 5x5 hoppers as seen above.

3 /8

Go Above and Create a Magma Block Platform

On the top right corner hopper, place a block by Shift crouching and build upwards of 23 blocks. On the 24th block, place a Magma Block, and facing the hoppers build a 5x5 Magma Block platform with a hole in the middle like below.

Minecraft First Gold Farm Magma Platform

Afterward, place a building block in the middle of the Magma platform hole. That is where the Zombie Piglins will head, ultimately falling for their death on the hoppers.

Make sure you're building the platforms above the hoppers because if you aren't, the gold farm won't get collected in the chests! To better see if you're placing the Magma platforms above the hoppers, you can use a Night Vision potion.

4 /8

Place Turtle Eggs and Build Defence Around It

In the middle building block you placed in the hole of the Magma platform, place another 2 random blocks, and on top of them place another building block. On these building blocks, you'll want to place your turtle eggs.

Afterward, on each side of the block having the turtle egg, place a trap door. Then while pressing Shift to crouch, jump and instantly start placing 8 more trapdoors on top of the other trapdoors on each side. Once you place them, start closing them on your way down to create a defense mechanism around the turtle eggs.

5 /8

Make Magma Block Platform Bigger

On each side of the platform, add 5 more Magma blocks. If you're having trouble staying on the Magma blocks in a Survival world, press Shift to crouch, and then staying on them won't deal you damage!

Minecraft Gold Farm Magma Platform Expansion

As you can see above, connect those Magma blocks you placed to make the platform longer. Then fill in the gaps with even more Magma. This is to make the platform bigger where the Zombie Piglins will spawn and drop their gold.

6 /8

Add More Magma Platforms

Now it's time to add more platforms, which will spawn more Zombie Piglins giving you even more gold out of this farm! Place 2 random blocks on the platform, and add a Magma block on top of it.

Minecraft Gold Farm Add More Magma Platforms

Then around that Magma block, simply replicate the whole platform from the one you just built previously. Just remember to leave a hole in the middle so the mobs can have a place to fall into.

You can add more Magma platforms to this farm, but here we'll go with 3 platforms. If you wish to add more, remember to place 2-3 turtle eggs per 2-3 platforms as you add more Magma platforms.

7 /8

Place Glass Blocks Above the Top Magma Platform

This step is a defense mechanism so ghasts won't spawn and destroy your gold farm. You'll want to place 2 random blocks on a Magma block on one side of where the turtle egg is held. Then on top of the random blocks place a glass block and build it into a whole line, which should also cover the turtle egg on top with glass.

Minecraft Gold Farm Glass Ghast Protection

Now leaving 2 lines empty, add another row of glass blocks. Repeat this until the whole platform has a strip of glass block lines like the above, and remove the temporary random blocks. Some players have even reported that they used stone slabs instead of glass blocks to stop ghasts from spawning!

8 /8

Build High for an AFK Spot

Now this Minecraft gold farm is finished, with the last step being creating an AFK spot. You'll have to build high, so make sure you have an Elytra, or more scaffolding and ladders to go high and low. So from the middle where the turtle egg is located, place 92 scaffolding upward.

Minecraft Gold Farm AFK Spot Hub

Then climb the scaffolding, and on top build yourself an AFK hub. So when you want to farm, position yourself here, and wait for the golden nuggets to start dropping in the chests below!

Does This Gold Farm Work in Minecraft Bedrock Edition?

Unfortunately, in Bedrock Edition you can't build above the Nether's roof. So this gold farm won't work in that edition of Minecraft. However, there are other Bedrock gold farms you can make for Minecraft that use the mechanic of activating and breaking a Nether portal, which if you didn't know has a chance of spawning a Zombie Piglin!
