Charcoal

If you are at the beginning of the game, charcoal is the best source of fuel. It is easy to create using the furnace, wood planks, and wood logs. You just have to collect some wood logs and convert half of them into planks. Now place the wooden planks in the place of fuel and logs on the top box in the furnace.

It will start burning the logs to convert them into charcoal. The burn time of charcoal is about 80 seconds that's good for initial gameplay. As we mostly need food in the beginning. You will get 8 items output from one piece of charcoal.

Coal

Coal is also the best fuel material in Minecraft. Coal is found in the caves or mountains as ore You can only mine it using a powerful tool like a pickaxe. If you want to keep your coal for a long time, you can store it in a chest in the form of a coal block.

Coal has many uses in Minecraft. For example, you can use it to smelt other ores, such as iron and gold. You can also use it to make torches, which are very useful for lighting your way in the dark. Coal also gives you the burning time of 1 minute and 20 seconds with 8 item output from the furnace.

Coal Block

It is primarily used for decoration, or as a fuel in furnaces and smelters. Block of coal can be obtained by either mining coal ore, finding them in dungeon chests, or trading with villagers. When broken using anything other than an explosion, coal blocks will drop 9 pieces of coal.

Coal blocks are easy to craft using coal. You need to put 9 coals in the 9 boxes of your crafting table. You will get the coal block on the left side. It will give you 13.4 minutes or burning time with 80 items output from the furnace.

Lava Bucket

The Lave bucket is the fuel source that gives the highest amount of time and items. A lava bucket gives you 1000 seconds which is 16.66 minutes and gives you the output of 100 items which is insane. That is why lava buckets are considered one of the most efficient fuels or longest burning fuels.

Getting a Lava bucket is dangerous, but an easy task. First, you need to craft an iron bucket using iron ingots. Then you have to search for lava. Lava can be found near active volcanoes, in the Nether, or from opening a lava lake. Once you have found some lava, use your bucket to scoop up some of the molten rock.

Blaze Rod

Blaze rods are another best material used as fuel in a furnace. It has 2 minutes of burning time and 12 items per cycle fuel efficiency. You can find Blaze Rod in the Nether. Blaze Rods are used to make Magma Cream, Brewing Stands, and Fire charges. To farm Blaze Rods, you will need to find a Blaze Spawner. These can be found in Nether Fortresses.

You have to take a huge risk to get the Blaze rod. A blaze rod is a very aggressive mob and will constantly shoot fireballs at you, making it difficult to get close enough to hit them.

Dried Kelp Blocks

If you are scared of the Nether, you can jump into the ocean to grab some fresh Kelp to make Kelp block. To make the dried Kelp, you have to smelt it down and craft it into dried Kelp blocks. You get a burning time of 3 minutes and 4 seconds with 20 items output, which is twice the time of coal.

Making Dried Kelp bock is not so easy. It requires patience and some hard work. Kelp is a wildly grown algae seaweed. It is mostly found in the deep oceans. Dried kelp blocks are also an efficient fuel source.

Logs

Wood logs can also be used as a fuel source but they are not sufficient even to produce 2 items. They produce 1.5 items in 15 seconds. Wood logs burn too fast and there are no mechanics to preserve that 0.5-second smelted item. You have to smelt that item again. But if you are using 2 wood logs, they will produce 3 items.

Wood logs are obtained directly from the trees. At the beginning of the game, wood logs are one of the first achievements you get. You can get wood logs by cutting trees with an axe.

Wood Planks

The first thing a wooden log converts into is the wooden plank. Basically wooden planks are used to craft other wooden things like chests and boats but you can also use them as a fuel source if you are out of fuel resources. Wooden planks also produce 2 items in 15 seconds which is not enough.

To get wooden planks, you have to place wooden logs on the crafting table. One wooden log produces 4 wooden planks.

Bookshelf

Bookshelves could also be used as a fuel source in Minecraft. When placed in the bottom slot of a furnace, it will smelt 2 items per Bookshelves block in 15 seconds. However, this is not an efficient way to fuel a furnace, as a single coal block can smelt 80 items.

You can get bookshelves by destroying libraries in strongholds, or by crafting them by placing the books in the middle row of the crafting table and placing 3 planks on the top and three planks on the bottom boxes of your crafting table.

Wooden Tools

Wooden tools, weapons, signs, and doors have the same amount of output. These things are easy to craft at the beginning of the game. If you burn s wooden tool, it will give you only 10 seconds of burning time with 1 item output.

These wooden tools may include a shovel, pickaxe, bow, hoe, sword, etc. It is pointless to burn tools as fuel. You can only do it to dispose of them or in case you don’t have any other choice.

Bamboo

Bamboo was introduced in Minecraft 1.14 update back in 2018. They are mostly used in Panda breeding and cooking. But you can also use them as fuel. Bamboos are not efficient as a fuel source for smelting in the furnace. They smelt only 0.25% of an item in 2.5 seconds, which means you will need 4 bamboo sticks to complete one item in 10 seconds.

You can find bamboo in jungle biomes. Finding bamboo is a tough grind as it is rare. One of the most obvious signs of bamboo in the jungle is the Panda. Pandas eat bamboo as part of their diet; if there are pandas, there will be bamboo.

Carpet

Carpet can also be served as fuel for smelting in the furnace. The carpet can smelt 0.25% of an item for only 3 seconds. To complete at least one cycle you will need 4 pieces of carpet. You can obtain carpet from the sheep wool. Sheep could be found in the grasslands.

Some other wooden and wool materials can also be used as fuel sources. These materials include chests, crafting tables, button s, signs, stairs, dice, wooden slabs, etc. You can use these items in the furnace if you are out of fuel sources. All these items give 2 items in 15 seconds. They are not considered an efficient fuel source.
