Sadly, for gamers with a computer bearing the bitten apple logo, Overwatch 2 hasn't been officially released for macOS. Though Blizzard hasn't announced a Mac variant of Overwatch 2, the good news is there are 3 workarounds that you can use to play Overwatch on Mac.
Through Cloud Gaming Services
In my opinion, the best way to play Overwatch on Mac is by purchasing a monthly subscription on one of the cloud gaming services. Not only it is legit, but most of all, you don't have to install Overwatch at all, so you can skip harming your disk size with Overwatch's enormous download size. As of now, three cloud gaming services that Mac users can run Overwatch on are:
- Boosteroid
- Shadow
- airgpu
The average cost for a monthly subscription to those services is about $7 a month, so a pretty fair price for a huge library of games you couldn't normally play. However, the biggest downside of using this method are potential network issues, so be sure to learn how to deal with errors such as lost connection to game server in Overwatch 2 and how to fix high ping.
Through Boot Camp
The next two methods will not work for playing Overwatch on Apple Silicon macs containing M1 and M2 processors. Still, if you are an Intel Mac user, Boot Camp offers an easy and inexpensive fix for you to run Windows. And when you have Windows, you can install Overwatch, of course!
The way Boot Camp works is it splits your Intel Mac hard drive into two separate "partitions," one for the already installed macOS, and then installing Windows on the other. Here are the steps you need to take to play Overwatch with Boot Camp:
- Check your Secure Boot setting – you want to have it on Full Security before installing Windows.
- Under your Utilities' folder in your Applications folder, open and run BootCamp Assist.
- Create a Windows partition
- Select the Boot Camp partition, and click Format
- Click "Next" and follow any onscreen instructions to continue the Windows installation. After this step, your Mac will start up with Windows installed.
- Install Battle Net Launcher and Download Overwatch 2!
Some believe that Boot Camp is not a good option, as you can't access your Mac applications while you're running Windows OS. However, with the processing power generally weaker on a Mac computer versus a gaming PC, it is better that your Mac device is only using its computing power on power-hungry apps like Overwatch where o.
Through Parallels 12
Parallels 12 offers another option for installing windows on Mac computers without restarting your computer; but again, it only works on Intel Macs, and requires a paid subscription.
- Visit Parallels' website from your web browser
- Click "Download Parallels Desktop" > "Download Now"
- Open the .dmg file., follow the on-screen instructions
- After downloading, launch the app from the Applications folder, then click File > New
- Hit "Install Windows or another OS from DVD or image File"
- Install Windows from a DVD, .iso disc image, or USB drive
- Specify name and location of the installation
- Install Battle Net launcher
- Install Overwatch 2
Also, from my experience, you should really adjust your graphics settings in Overwatch, as you might experience some lag if you decide to use Parallels 12 for gaming, especially if you use a Mac with Intel HD graphics.
