The 10 Best Pokemon Types [Ranked]

1 /10

Steel type

Steel types are some of the most defensive types of Pokemon in the entire franchise. Steel type itself has a whopping ten resistances, especially useful considering it resists both Fairy and Dragon types as well as being immune to Poison type moves.

Steelix

Steel type isn't the most useful offensive type, with its only major use being as one of the few counters to Fairy types, but it also hits hard against Ice and Rock types.

Some notable Steel type Pokemon include Steelix, which got itself a spot on this list of the best snake Pokemon, or cosmic Ultra Beast Celesteela.

2 /10

Fairy type

Fairy types are a great choice of Pokemon, with some of the best Pokémon in the franchise. Some notable Fairy types include Zacian, Gardevoir, and Togekiss, all of which made it onto this list of the best Fairy type Pokemon.

Fairy type Pokemon show that cute doesn't need to mean weak, as the Fairy type is easily one of the bestPokemon types.

Togekiss

With a total immunity to Dragon types, and super effective moves against powerful Fighting types and Dark types, Fairy type is a real beast in battle.

Fairy is the only type with an immunity to Dragon type, although it does have weaknesses to Steel types and Poison types to counteract this.

3 /10

Fire type

Fire types are a powerful offensive type, made that much more special by being relatively rare as types go. Most Fire types are starter Pokémon or their evolutions such as Charmander or Charizard, but there are other Pokemon such as Ponyta, which got itself a spot on this list of the best shiny Pokemon.

Fire is a great type because it's super effective against tanky Steel types, offering players a way to whittle down the health of these highly defensive Pokemon.

Ponyta

But Fire type moves also hit Bug, Grass, and Ice types for super effective damage too, making them a great offensive type. Fire type moves are a great choice, as having a super effective attack ready can make a huge difference especially in the competitive scene.

This makes Fire Pokemon highly sought after, and Fire type one of the best types.

4 /10

Ground type

Ground type Pokemon are a great choice in competitive teams or in casual play. These Pokémon are often very strong defensively, with great Defense stats, but with moves like Earthquake and Earth Power make very effective attackers too.

Ground type is a great choice of move when it comes to coverage, too, as it's the only weakness of Electric Pokemon such as Raichu or Jolteon. But Ground types are one-trick ponies, as they also offer a counter to Fire, Poison, and Rock types!

Mudsdale

There are some truly fantastic Ground types out there including majestic Mudsdale which even got a spot on this list of the heaviest Pokemon.

Ground type moves offer some great coverage too. With an immunity to Electric type moves, Ground Pokemon are a great choice in battle. Ground type's versatility makes it one of the best types although it is weak against Grass types.

5 /10

Water type

Water type Pokemon are extremely common throughout the Pokemon games, being the most common type of Pokemon.

Water type moves are super effective against powerful Fire and Ground types, which means Water Pokemon and Water type moves are a common counter to these types in competitive battling.

Poliwrath

Water type Pokemon have only two weaknesses, to Electric type moves and Grass type moves, while being super effective against three types.

Water type Pokemon are a great choice in many competitive teams making use of a Rain Dance strategy, as weather effects can affect many Water Pokemon and Water type moves. Water type is a good offensive and defensive type.

Some notable Water types include Gyarados, Milotic, and Poliwrath - which got itself a spot on this list of the best tadpole Pokémon!

6 /10

Dragon type

Dragon type was once considered the best Pokemon type, but its top spot has been snatched in more recent years. But make no mistake, Dragon type attacks slap hard, and the type is still a really great type.

Dragon type has four resistances to common and powerful types like Electric, Grass, Water, and Fire. These types of Pokemon and these types of moves are extremely common throughout the games, so Dragon is a decent defensive option.

Goodra

Since the introduction of Fairy, though, Dragon type has gained a new weakness, and Fairies are even completely immune to Dragon type moves! This has seen the Dragon type slip down to the rankings, but as many Dragon type Pokemon are pseudo-legendary Pokémon like Dragonite, Goodra, or Garchomp, this type still sees great use and is a popular type besides.

7 /10

Electric type

The Electric type is a great Pokemon type with some shockingly cool Pokemon in it. It has only one weakness, to Ground type, but can hit back against super common Water and Flying types.

It's even possible for some Electric Pokemon to have no weaknesses at all, such as Eelektross, which loses its weakness to Ground attacks thanks to its Ability Levitate.

Electric Pokemon are great choices, but the Electric type is also a good option for coverage in movesets.

8 /10

Ghost type

Ghost types are often spooky and scary in their design, but the Ghost typing is also a really strong offensive type. Ghost Pokemon and Ghost type moves offer a good counter to Ghost Pokemon themselves as well as Psychic type Pokemon.

There are some great Ghost type moves like Shadow Ball and Shadow Claw, so Ghost is a great type to use for coverage too.

Hisuian Zoroark

Not only that, but the Ghost typing gives Pokemon an immunity to Normal and Fighting type moves. These moves see widespread use in competitive play so the Ghost typing is a good one to have!

Some notable Ghost type Pokemon include Gengar, Misdreavus, and Hisuian Zoroark.

9 /10

Fighting type

Fighting type moves are really common and some of the most useful moves in the franchise. Fighting type is strong against five types - Dark types, Normal types, Rock types, Ice types, and even powerful Steel types too.

Urshifu

This makes Fighting type moves a must have on any competitive team as Steel types are extremely common, and because Fighting type is Normal type's only weakness. Many other types quiver in fear when facing Fighting types!

Some interesting Fighting type Pokemon include Machamp, Hariyama, and even Legendary Pokémon Zamazenta and Urshifu!

10 /10

Normal type

Normal type might seem like an odd choice for the list of the best types, but Normal type is a versatile type. Normal types often have a wide movepool, and as the Normal type is only weak to Fighting type, it can be a good defensive choice.

Pokémon like Snorlax and Blissey see great use as tanks, for example. Normal type Pokemon are also immune to Ghost type moves.

Blissey

And some of the strongest moves in the Pokemon games are Normal type moves too, from the powerful Hyper Beam to ear-splitting Boomburst! Despite its lack of super effective moves against any other types, Normal type is a good choice of Pokemon and offers some good options for many movesets.
