Everything You Need to Know About Sponge [Sponge Minecraft Guide]

Sponges in Minecraft are very helpful for many different reasons in Minecraft. With the ability to absorb water fast, and also release the water for reuse, there are unlimited possibilities for water construction or Ocean Monument findings! Below we have covered everything you need to know about the sponge in Minecraft. Let´s take a look!

What is a Sponge in Minecraft?

A sponge in Minecraft resembles that of a sponge you would find under the ocean. A type of plant that absorbs water. Today, you may even clean your dishes with a sponge to absorb water. In Minecraft, it performs in the same way!

1

With a sponge, you can place it near water, which will perform to absorb the water into the block, making it a wet sponge.

How to Use a Sponge in Minecraft

A sponge in Minecraft has the sole purpose of absorbing water in the space it is sitting, to create air. Creating this air space allows the Minecraft player to create or adventure in a space that is typically full of water, but without the need to swim or lose life being underwater.

2

When placed, the sponge can absorb water that is flowing or source blocks about 7 blocks out in all of the six directions/sides that the sponge carries as a block. Keep in mind, a sponge only has a limit of absorbing 135 blocks of water. Once it is full, you will begin to see water dripping from its sides, showing it is of maximum hold.

How to Find a Sponge in Minecraft

Sponges are found in only a few spaces, and they can be difficult to acquire. Ocean Monuments naturally generate sponges in what are called "sponge rooms". In these rooms, you can mine up to 30 sponges, which is a pretty significant amount! In order to break the sponges to add to inventory, the fastest way is to use the hoe in Minecraft. Other than this, any tool can do the job, even your hands!

3

Once you find an Ocean Monument, there is a mob drop on one sponge if you defeat an elder guardian. Elder guardians drop always a wet sponge once defeated.

How to Make a Dry Sponge in Minecraft

As mentioned, above, sponges have the possibility to be dropped as a "wet sponge block". Most of the time, this is also the case. So how do we make a dry sponge in Minecraft? A dry sponge can be created by the following:

  • Placing the wet sponge in the Nether. It will immediately dry out into a normal sponge.
  • Find a dry biome in the Overworld where sponges will also immediately turn into a normal sponge. (Bedrock Edition)
  • If you place a normal sponge in water in a dry biome, once moved it will immediately return to being a dry sponge. (Bedrock Edition)
  • Smelting one wet sponge in a furnace. This will produce the sponge to become dry.

4

To smelt wet sponges, make sure to have a furnace with fuel such as coal, to ignite the furnace to dry out the wet sponges.

How to Make a Wet Sponge in Minecraft

Wet sponges are much more common than dry ones. The sole purpose of the sponge is to absorb water, so making a wet sponge is actually quite simple. Once you find a sponge, whether in sponge rooms or from an elder guardian, it will already be dropped as wet.

5

Once you dry out the sponge, in order to make it wet again, all you need to do is place it near a body of water. Whether it is flowing or just an ordinary water block, the water will become absorbed instantly by the sponge.
