Best Ember combos, strings, and combat tactics in Brawlhalla

Ember is one, if not the only mortal to reach the center of the Fangwild. She’s conquered that magic wood, and now yearns to return to her home through victory in Valhalla.

If you want to know specific combos about Ember’s weapons, check out our Katars combos and strings and Bow combos and strings guide.

Ember stats and best stance

1

Ember is a hasty damage dealer, with 7 Speed, 6 Strength and Dexterity, and a paper-thin 3 Defense. With that in mind, you want to play around the fact that her high speed and high priority weapons give her a very strong position in neutral, so you’ll want to abuse that to win more neutrals than your opponent, which your high Strength will push into stock leads.

Ember special tactics

Neutral game

As I said above, the neutral game is all about using that Speed stat to zip around your opponent and bait out attacks from them. Dash Dancing, or Dashing forwards and backwards in quick succession, is great for this, especially on Katars and Bow. On Katars, use Dash Dance SLight, and, on Bow, use Dash Dance DLight or SLight, based on how close they get to you.

2

Ember’s Signatures are pretty weak, but they have some niche use cases. Bow NSig, for example, is a pretty good string extension out of NLight at lower percentages, and can be used to read dodges out of SLight and DLight. Katars DSig is one of those Signature Attacks that is basically a Quick Attack, and its backdash can be used to bait out attacks, and then punish with a charged Signature attack.

Offstage Game

Ember’s offstage is strong, but it brings a lot of risk. Her Speed is high, which enables some really funky outplay potential, but her demonstrably low Defense makes any attempt to dogfight very scary, as getting hit once makes any possible trade that doesn’t result in a kill bad.

3

As a rule of thumb, you really only want to go offstage when you have Bow, and the opponent can be killed with just one or two well placed attacks.

Edgeguarding

Ember’s edgeguarding is pretty strong, due to her weapons, and their Signature Attacks. Bow, in particular, can cover so many options with a proper combination of DAir, NLight, Dash Jump, and DSig.

4

Katars are also pretty good at edgeguarding, but you’ll have to get a bit more creative offstage to really get some value, or even a stock, out of a successful edgeguard.

Ember Best Combos, Strings and Signature Moves

If you like Ember’s weapons, but she doesn’t seem to be the legend for you, then you might want to consider checking out TGG’s Weapon Guides:

Ember Signature Moves and special tactics

Katars nSig

Ember twirls through the air with her Katars extended, catching opponents from both sides and knocking them away. Very good for catching Jumps, which are a common reaction to Katars approaches like DLight or NAir.

Katars sSig

Ember swipes forward with one Katar, then lunges again with the other. In my opinion, this is just a worse version of DSig - sure, it has better reach, but it’s so slow, and the punish window is massive, so I wouldn’t recommend using it.

Katars dSig

Ember leaps backwards, then slashes both Katars in a forward lunge. Very good for spot dodge reading, and for dodging approaches.

Bow nSig

Ember calls upon a bird of the Fangwild to aid her in battle, hitting opponents in the air above of her. Very good damage, and an excellent string extension at lower percentages. Also strong for dodge reading, as you can catch Spot Dodges, Out Dodges by Dash Cancelling the Signature Attack, In Dodge by Dash Cancel X-Pivoting the Signature Attack, and any Up Dodge by combining those with Jump/Dash Jump Gravity Cancel.

Bow sSig

Ember rides her trusty wolf forward, shooting an arrow point blank while dashing forward. Very good in lower divisions, but doesn’t really have that much purpose past Gold.

Bow dSig

Ember backflips high into the air, releasing a powerful shot straight down. You’ll generally see this being used for cornerguarding, but its hitbox manipulation is really the main benefit.

Best Ember Katars combos and strings

dLight  > GC> nSig

Great mixup for catching Spot Dodges, jumps, and reactions. Also works as a kill string at higher percentages.

SLight > SSig

Pretty much the only case where you can even attempt using this Signature Attack, be mindful of the large Dodge Window.

SLight > Chase Dodge > DSig

Excellent read for those pesky In Dodgers. You can mix this up with DLight, NLight, and NAir to leave your opponents permanently guessing.

dLight> nSig/Dash nSig/ XPivot nSig/ Dash XPivot nSig

The options I listed above are for different types of reads, which you can read more about in the Signature Attacks section of this article. Generally, you’ll want to use this only after you’ve downloaded your opponent’s reactions to dLight, as it’s easy to punish on whiff.

sLight > sSig

If you don’t feel confident going to the dLight out of sLight, you can try this instead, though I wouldn’t use it too often.

sLight>dSig

Similar to the above string, but works for catching jumps, Spot Dodges, and reaction attacks.
