Ulgrim The Unyielding Anvil, one of the sons of Ivaldi comes from a long lineage of expert weaponsmiths at the service of the god. No mine too perilous, no material too hard to obtain are his motto. Being a smith is a very rewarding profession and Ulgrim applies a strict quality control on his creations by using them in the everlasting tournament himself.

Ulgrim stats and best stance

Ulgrim stats lean favourably towards defence (7) and strength (6), with a peculiar secondary focus on speed (6) and his lowest stat being dexterity (3). The dexterity being low is not a problem considering the high mobility and chain potential of his weapons.

Ulgrim special tactics

Neutral game

The axe and rocket lance are an outrageously aggressive combo that can chain a killing combo very easily thanks to the high stunlock potential. Play around aerial combat using the recovery and the side air as your main damaging attacks. When confronting an enemy on the ground using the rocket lance your priority is exploiting the long range of the weapon to keep the enemy at bay.

Playing aerial is recommended, as both weapons have great aerial combat assets. Ulgrim sigs are powerful but slow, and should be used with confidence that they will connect.

Offstage Game

Playing offstage can be done with the axe or the rocket lance, as both weapons are great at fighting while floating in the air. Abuse the recovery of the axe and the side air of the rocket lance to gain control over the situation. The side air of the lance is especially useful when attempting a return to stage.

Using ground pounds to hammer the enemy onto their death can be a solid strategy, especially with the lance.

Edgeguarding

Edguarding is the perfect time to show off the sigs, especially the axe nSig. Play around your sigs and wait for the enemy to attempt a return to the stage.

Going in for the kill can also be done, as both Axe and Rocket Lance are great at knocking out an offstage enemy.

Axe nSig

Ulgrim throws an energy clone of his axe diagonally upwards. If the hit connects, the opponent will be stunned in the air before getting hit by a follow up strike that sends it flying downward. This signature is incredible in edgeguarding situations.

Axe sSig

Ulgrim deals a series of axe strikes while moving horizontally. While not being the most useful of his signatures, this sig is suitable for ground control.

Axe dSig

Ulgrim strikes in the two horizontal directions using both the axe and the energy weapon. This signature is fairly fast and perfect for short combos or for baiting the enemy.

Rocket Lance nSig

Ulgrim charges up a small blade from the butt of the lance, and then strikes upwards. The resulting attack will send an enemy flying upwards with great force. This signature is perfect for edgeguarding and short combos.

Rocket Lance sSig

Ulgrim charges up the energy blade before dealing a series of attacks horizontally. Good for gaining stage control or as a killing move at the end of a combo.

Rocket Lance dSig

Ulgrim creates an energy chainsaw from the back of his lance, and stabs a player with it. After a short while the player will be sent flying diagonally upwards. .

dSig

A very strong edgeguarding tactic, use it mainly on enemies coming from below.

dAir > sSig

Start from the air and stun an enemy before dealing a killing blow with the side signature. Easy to perform.

dAir > sLight > nSig

Similar to the second combo, but the additional side light will add more damage to the mix. Use it on already wounded enemies, or else you won’t be able to connect the combo.

Best Ulgrim Axe combos and strings

The axe is a great weapon with important aerial capabilities mostly due to the excellent recovery and sAirs of the weapon. It can be played offensively, searching for gimps and juggling opponents in the air with dAirs and nAirs.

sLight > nSig

Use the side light to make an enemy travel upwards and connect to the signature attack. Extremely strong when used on edges, will likely result in a kill.

nLight > Dodge > sSig

Throw an enemy near the edge and then slide to it using the dodge before dealing the killing blow with a side signature. This combo can be fairly complicated to connect, but it’s pretty unpredictable and hard to read.

dAir > dSig

Use the down air to stun an enemy before executing a powerful down signature, most likely resulting in a killing blow.
